Chief Engineering Officer, S.S. British Monarch (Glasgow), Merchant Navy. Supposed dropwned at sea when his ship was torpedoed 19 June 1940. Aged 37. Born Alloa, Clackmannanshire 1902. Son of Charles D. Galloway, and of Christina C. Galloway, of Alloa, Clackmannanshire. Resident 29, Paton Street, Alloa, Clackmannanshire. Height 6 feet 1 inch, blue eyes, fair hair, fair complexion. No known grave. Commemorated on TOWER HILL MEMORIAL, London. Panel 20.
GALLOWAY William Hunter
Private 14678076, 7th Battalion, Princess Louise's (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders). Killed in action in North-West Europe 13 July 1944. Aged 18. Born and resident Clackmannanshire. Son of Mr. and Mrs. George Galloway, of Alloa, Clackmannanshire. Buried in RANVILLE WAR CEMETERY, Calvados, France. Plot III. Row B. Grave 16.

GATHERER George
Private 2875192, 8th Battalion, Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). Killed in action in North-West Europe 15 September 1944. Aged 31. Born Aberdeenshire, resident Aberdeen. GREEN James [McNeil]
Able Seaman P/JX 175165, H.M.S. Jaguar, Royal Navy. Died at sea when at 02:27 hours his ship was torpedoed and sunk by German Submarine U-652 off the coast of Egypt 26 March 1942. Aged 23. Born 24 December 1918 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. Son of Edward and Mary Ann Burns Green, of Alloa, Clackmannanshire. No known grave. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 63, Column 3.
GUNNIS Richard G

[Listed as Aircraftman 2nd Class, Royal Air Force on memorial] Cabin Boy, S.S. Memphis (Alexandria), Merchant Navy, ship registered in Egypt. Drowned at sea when his ship foundered off Ireland 28 February 1941. Aged 19. Resident 35, Hilton Road, Alloa, Scotland. No known grave.

Note: The 2,088-ton Egyptian steamer Memphis, on a voyage from Manchester, England, to Vigo, Spain, ran into heavy weather off the northwest coast of Ireland. Soon afterwards her engines broke down and she foundered with all on board being lost, which included 29 survivors from the Norwegian motor vessel Benjamin Franklin that had been torpedoed by German submarine U-103. GUNNIS Stanley Frederick Maude
Pilot Officer (Observer) 63809, 21 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flying out of R.A.F. Watton, Norfolk, in a Blenheim IV, serial number V6436, he was killed when his aircraft was shot down by flak at Maassluis during a low-level raid on shipping in Rotterdam harbour 28 August 1941. Aged 23. Native of Alloa, Clackmannanshire. Son of Matthew Gunnis, and of Elizabeth Dorman Gunnis, of Alloa, Clackmannanshire. Died 28 August 1941. Aged 23.
