BOLSOVER'S TRIBUTE TO HEROES OF THE WAR.

Saturday will long be remembered by the people of Bolsover as the day on which the town paid its united tribute to the memory of some 160 local men who fell in the war. The occasion was the unveiling and dedication of the memorial cross, which has been erected in the Market Place at a cost, including enclosure, of approximately £800.

Designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield, R.A., the cross is of Portland stone, with bronze sword. The names of the fallen appear on the base, and the inscription reads: "Their name liveth for evermore."

The unveiling and dedication ceremony was pre-ceded by a united service in the Parish Church, where seats were reserved for the relatives of the fallen.

Among the organisations present at the service were the Imperial Comrades' Association, the Bolsover and Shuttlewood branches of the Comrades of the Great War, the N.F.D.D.S.S., and the Ambulance Division. who, accompanied by members of the Urban Council and headed by the Bolsover Colliery Silver Prize Band, marched from the Castle to the church under the command of Lieut.-Colonel H. Tylden Wright.

An appropriate address was given by the Archdeacon of Chesterfield, the Rev. E. F. Crosse. and assisting in the service were the Rev. D. Akrill-Jones, R.D. (Vicar of Bolsover), the Rev. H . W. Fuller (Wesleyan minister), and the Rev. T. W. Cole (Primitive Methodist minister).

DERBYSHIRE MEN AND THE WAR
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE FIVE.)

BOLSOVER CASUALTIES.

The dangers that beset the men of the R.A.M.C. in their beneficent work ministering to the needs of the injured have been painfully illustrated by the death of Pte F. Buckley, who was fatally wounded while on duty, and passed away in hospital on the evening June 18th. Formerly employed at the Glapwell Colliery, Private Buckley was 21 years of age, and a young man considerable promise. In Hillstown, where he lived for a number of years, he was highly respected, and the people of the village will extend a large measure of sympathy to his parents, Mr and Mrs H. Buckley, who left Hilltown for Langwith some months ago. Deceased and his cousin, CorpL C. Peach, the son Mr and Mrs J. Peach, Hilltown, joined the R.A.M.C. in January, 1915, and went to France in July of the same year. It was the sad duty of Peach to convey to Mrs Buckley the news of her son’s death. He wrote: "I have some very bad news for you. He had just left me to go on a message, and he died doing his duty. He was always brave and so willing to save the wounded, and he died for a good cause. I can say no more, my heart is full. Only God, Who knows all, can comfort you. Poor old Frank was badly hit last night and died at the hospital." With Corpl. Peach's letter was another communication from Pvte. C. G. M. Harries. A third letter from a Methodist Chaplain, the Rev. G. E Minnew, who states:— "On returning from leave I am very sorry indeed to find that your son, Frank, has died from wounds received the line. He was a good fellow, much appreciated by his officers, and very popular with the men. He attended my services whenever possible, and was I was always pleased to see him. I only hope that the death the brave lads may bring forth the fruit of liberty and righteousness. I pray that you and your family may able take such a view of your loss as will be a source of encouragement to you, and may God sustain you."

The inhabitants of New Bolsover were greatly shocked on Monday morning to learn of the death of Miss Elizabeth Carter, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs S. The deceased had been ill for only a few days, and a telegram to inform her parents of her condifon was despatched from Lewisham on Saturday evening.
