From
the local paper 23rd December 1916:
Private
H. Bentley.
News has just reached Bolsover that Private H. Bentley Notts/Derbys
has been killed in action. Private Bentley who was married leaves
a widow and two children. He was 24 years of age and formerly resided
with Mrs. Hunt of Spencer Street Carr vale. The sad news was conveyed
in a letter to Mrs. Bentley from Lieutenant R.S. Bishop of the 33rd
Machine Gun Corps who writes. "I very greatly regret to have
to tell you that your husband was killed in action yesterday. His
officer Lieut. George Jagger was wounded earlier in the week and
I took his place. I found your husband was in charge of a gun and
doing excellent work. He was a very brave and capable man and one
we can ill afford to lose. Will you accept the sympathy of every
officer and men in this company in your loss. Your husband was killed
instantly by a shell and was reverently buried by his comrades.
The place will be marked by a cross. He was killed in the front
line and no soldier will wish for a better death. You must always
remember that he died whilst gallantly doing his duty. May God comfort
you and help you to bear up. You husband was a man to be proud of."

MEN AND THE WAR
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE FIVE.)
BOLSOVER
CASUALTIES.
The
dangers that beset the men of the R.A.M.C. in their beneficent
work ministering to the needs of the injured have been painfully
illustrated by the death of Pte F. Buckley, who was fatally wounded
while on duty, and passed away in hospital on the evening June
18th. Formerly employed at the Glapwell Colliery, Private Buckley
was 21 years of age, and a young man considerable promise. In
Hillstown, where he lived for a number of years, he was highly
respected, and the people of the village will extend a large measure
of sympathy to his parents, Mr and Mrs H. Buckley, who left Hilltown
for Langwith some months ago. Deceased and his cousin, CorpL C.
Peach, the son Mr and Mrs J. Peach, Hilltown, joined the R.A.M.C.
in January, 1915, and went to France in July of the same year.
It was the sad duty of Peach to convey to Mrs Buckley the news
of her son’s death. He wrote: "I have some very bad
news for you. He had just left me to go on a message, and he died
doing his duty. He was always brave and so willing to save the
wounded, and he died for a good cause. I can say no more, my heart
is full. Only God, Who knows all, can comfort you. Poor old Frank
was badly hit last night and died at the hospital." With
Corpl. Peach's letter was another communication from Pvte. C.
G. M. Harries. A third letter from a Methodist Chaplain, the Rev.
G. E Minnew, who states:— "On returning from leave
I am very sorry indeed to find that your son, Frank, has died
from wounds received the line. He was a good fellow, much appreciated
by his officers, and very popular with the men. He attended my
services whenever possible, and was I was always pleased to see
him. I only hope that the death the brave lads may bring forth
the fruit of liberty and righteousness. I pray that you and your
family may able take such a view of your loss as will be a source
of encouragement to you, and may God sustain you."

SUDDEN BEREAVEMENT.
New Bolsover Young Lady's Death.
The
inhabitants of New Bolsover were greatly shocked on Monday morning
to learn of the death of Miss Elizabeth Carter, eldest daughter
of Mr and Mrs S. Carter, of the Model Village, who passed away
at the Lewisham Park Fever Hospital at the early age of twenty-two.
The deceased had been ill for only a few days, and a telegram
to inform her parents of her condifon was despatched from Lewisham
on Saturday evening. Unfortunately, it arrived at Bolsover too
late for delivery the same night, and did not reach its destination
until Monday morning, when a second message was received conveying
the sad intelligence of the young lady's death.
Extremely
popular in Bolsover, Miss Carter was a member of a family that
for a number of years has been actively associated with the work
of the New Bolsover Wesleyan Church, and the bereaved parents'
tragic loss has evoked feelings of the deepest sympathy. She formerly
attended the local Wesleyan Church, and later joined the Bolsover
branch of the Girls' Friendly Society. Bright and vivacious, she
was keenly interested in many forms of recreation, and before
entering the nursing profession was a very useful member of the
Bolsover Colliery Tennis Club. Miss Carter's first experience
of nursing was gained in a Red Cross hospital in the Sheffield
district, where she remained a few weeks. About seven months ago
she left Sheffield for London to take up an appointment as a probationer
in the Lewisham Park Fever Hospital, and in this position she
won the esteem and regard of all with whom she came into contact.

Quick disaster has overtaken one of the miners who recently joined
the tunnelling section of the Royal Engineers in the person of
Private Daniel Davis of Orchard Terrace Carr Vale. Joining on
the 10th of September he went out to France quite recently and
whilst working in the trenches on the 20th October he was killed
by a grenade. The information is conveyed in a letter sent to
Mr. W.R. Collier Manager of Bolsover colliery by a friend of the
deceased ex Sapper R. Elliot who writes, "I am sorry to inform
you of the death of one of the Bolsover Sappers Private D. Davis
who was working in the trenches when he got the contents of a
grenade. He was the only man from Bolsover who came out with me.
We buried him in a little graveyard at the back of the trenches
another man and myself helping to cover him up."
Private Davis who was 30 years of age leaves a widow and three
young children.
