DUFFIELD WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information
Compiled and copyright © Julie Walton 2019

The memorial is to be found just outside the gates of St Alkmund’s Church, at the end of the car park, on a road island on Church Drive, Eyes MEadow, Duffield, Amber Valley, Derbyshire. The memorial takes the form of a plain sandstone Latin cross on a square sandstone pedestal and a three stepped base. There is a granite block attached to the bottom step bearing the Royal British Legion inscription and with a recess in the top, probably to hold flowers. A metal rail has been added around the base for the support of tributes. There are 22 names for World War 1 and 20 for World War 2. The memorial was unveiled on 1 May 1921 by Admiral Sir Frederick Inglefield and dedicated by Reverend Eddison. It was designed by Messrs Naylor and Sale, of Derby. The memorial is a Grade II listed building. The memorial cost £372 5s. 9d to erect with a further £5 being paid for the land. Details of the unveiling appeared in the Derbyshire Advertiser and Journal - Friday 6 May 1921, page 11.
