SCARCLIFFE WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial stands to the Southwest of the church, St Leonards Churchyard, Main Street, Scarcliffe, Bolsover, Derbyshire. It takes the form of a Celtic Cross mounted on a stone plinth the front face of which contains the names of the men from both World Wars that died. The memorial stands close to the entrance to the local parish church, St Leonard's.

Private 37963, "C" Company, 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. Died 6th April 1917. Aged 24. Son of William and Sarah Ann Blacknell, of Scarcliffe, Chesterfield. Buried in MAROC BRITISH CEMETERY, GRENAY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot I. Row Q. Grave 8.

HINCHCLIFFE, Croix de Guerre (Belgium).

Frederick James

[Listed as HINCHLIFFE on CWGC other Nottinghamshire County Council documents give his name as Hinchliffe and this is the spelling on his Army Service Record] Sergeant 295272, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died of wounds 25th March 1918. Aged 28. Born Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire, enlisted Mansfield 1915, resident Pleasley Hill. Son of Joseph and Ellen Hinchliffe, of Pleasley, Mansfield; husband of Alice May Hinchliffe, of Scarcliffe, Chesterfield. Police constable with Nottinghamshire Constabulary. Formerly 5432, 148th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Buried in ABBEVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. Plot I. Row C. Grave 27. His name is on a memorial to employees of Nottinghamshire County Council who died in WWI and on this his name is also given as Hinchcliffe.

Born Swanwick, Derbyshire, resident Sutton-In-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, enlisted Bolsover, Derbyshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 33, born Swanwick, Derbyshire, a Coal Miner Hewer, boarding in Scarcliffe, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Buried in LIEVIN COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Pas de Calais, France. Plot IV. Row A. Grave 3.

Sergeant 1606136, 171 Battery, 57 Light Anit-Aircraft battery, Royal Artillery. Died 20th September 1945. Aged 35. Son of James and Annie Evans, of Stoney Houghton. Buried in St LEONARD CHURCHYARD, SCARCLIFFE, Derbyshire.
