The Pokesdown district of Bournemouth lies between Boscombe and Christchurch. This memorial is situated on Christchurch Road on either side of the entrance gates to St James Church and St James School and takes the form of metal dedicatory plaques on the left and right hand pillas set into the wall with gold, captial, letters. The memorial was dedicated by the Bishop of Winchester 16 July 1951.

Ordiary Seaman P/JX 291665, H.M.S. "Airedale", Royal Navy. Died 15th June 1942. Age 33. Son of George F. and Louise Everall Long, of Bournemouth; husband of Marjorie Lilian Patricia Long, of Boscombe. No known grave. No known grave. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Note: HMS Airedale, L07 was launched in 12th August 1941, built by John Brown Shipbuilding & Engineering Company Ltd. (Clydebank, Scotland) . Commissioned 8th January 1942 as an escort destroyer of the Hunt (Type III) class, christened Airedale. Bombed and heavily damaged by German Ju 87 (Stuka) divebombers south of Crete in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea 15th June 1942 while escorting the convoy "Vigorous". Scuttled by HMS Aldenham and HMS Hurworth.

Killed in action flying out of Luqa, Malta, in a Bristol Blenheim IV, serial number Z7682, when his aircraft struck the mast of a ship that was being attacked north-east of Kerkennah Island off Sfax, Tunisia, and crashed into the sea 26 August 1941. Born 21 December 1915. In 1939 he was a Funeral Director (Manager), resident 19 Clarence Park Road, Bournemouth, Bournemouth C.B., Hampshire. No known grave. Commemorated on MALTA MEMORIAL, Malta.
