EGGLESTON, HOLY TRINITY, WAR MEMORIAL

The War Memorial is inside the Holy Trinity Church, Eggleston. It is in the form of a triptych, it is made of materials salvaged from HMS Brittannia (1-2). This is one of a number of memorials that were made from timbers of the Britannia - in County Durham there is another triptych of very similar dimensions and style in Neasham Village Hall. The memorial was originally designed by Bodley and Hare and manufactured by Messrs. Hughes and Bolckow Ltd. It as dedicated and unveiled 3 August 1918. The Roll of Honour contains the names of those who fell in World War 1, those who fell in World War 2 and those who served and returned from World War 1.

Son of the late Thomas Hodgson, of Foggarthwaite. No known grave. Commemorated on VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 3.

Private 54506, 1st/7th Battalion, Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment). Killed in action 9 October 1917. Aged 32. Born Eggleston, Darlington, resident Cockfield, Nr. Darlington, enlisted Darlington. Son of Elizabeth and the late George Raine; husband of Jane Ann Raine, of 5, Brasses Houses, Lands Bank, Cockfields Co. Durham. No known grave.
