The
Tollesbury War memorial stands in the grounds of St Mary's Church, Church
Street, Tollesbury, Maldon, Essex and takes the form of a Three stepped
brick base upon which is mounted a double wooden plinth and cross. There
are 46 names listed for World War 1 and 22 names for World War 2.

TOLLESBURY.
A Service of Commemoration was held
at the War Memorial Cross in front of the church on St. George's Day,
this being the fourth anniversary of the dedication. An address was
given by the Vicar.

(A. /Maj.) William Charles Maskell, M. C. , R.F.A.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Although badly
shaken by being completely buried in a dug-out with two other
officers, and extricated with great difficulty, he immediately
organised a stretcher party to carry two officers to the dressing
station, one of whom died of his wounds. He was the only officer
left, and continued under heavy shell fire to conduct the fire
of his battery.

Major
William Charles Maskell, M.C., D.S.O., who died of wounds on Dec.
15th. aged 28, was the youngest son of Mr. Charles Maskell, of
Fallesbury. He joined the Army in 1907, and on the outbreak of
war went to Flanders with the first British Expeditionary Force.
He got a commission for serving his gun during the retreat from
Mons, and was personally congratulated by five generals for his
conspicuous bravery. Gasetted second-lieutenant for service in
the field in October, 1914, he became lieutenant in June, 1915,
was mentioned in despatches in January, 1916, and was awarded
the M.C. in June of the same year, and an additional bar in Sept.
, 1917. In November he was awarded the D.S.O. He was very popular
with his own men, and much esteemed by his brother officers. His
Colonel, writing to his father, says: "I have only known
him for three months, but that was quite long enough for one to
realise what a splendidly gallant man he was. I cannot tell you
what a loss he is to me. He was always cheerful, even under most
trying circumstances, and if a thing was humanely possible I could
rely on him to do it." Young Haskell was well-known at Fowey,
he being the nephew of the late Capt. Peake and also of Mrs. W.
H. Heller, of North Street.
