Compiled and copyright © Leonard Macdonald 2006
The
memorial is situated in the Garden of Remembrance, East Parade, Rhyl.
The central Memorial was first erected on the Rhyl Promenade 1904 in
memory of the Six Rhyl men who lost their lives in the South African
War of 1899-1902. It was unveiled on 3rd September 1904 by the Lord
Lieutenant of Flintshire. It was formed of a stepped base surmounted
by a pedestal bearing a soldier in the Boer War Campaign uniform. In
1928 two miniature cenotaphs of Aberdeen Grey Granite, 5ft 9in. high
and fixed onto a base of York stone steps was added. There are four
bronze Plaques 3ft. 6in. high placed on each of the two cenotaphs each
containing 48 names (288 in total) of those who gave their lives during
World War 1 (unveiled 1919). On inner side of the two cenotaphs is a
bronze Laurel Wreath. The Unveiling and Dedication Ceremony took place
on Sunday 11th November 1928. After World War 2 the names of the fallen
where added to the central pedestal (115 names in total). The Memorial
was moved to its present location at the new Garden of Remembrance.
It was opened and dedicated on Sunday 15th August 1948. Since 14th February
1994 the memorials has been classed as a Grade II Listed Building.
Additional names have been added to the central pedestal in memory of
two lives lost in the Northern Ireland and Falklands conflict.
