AWBRIDGE WAR MEMORIAL

The Awbridge War memorial stands at the junction of Romsey Road and Danes Road, Awbridge, Test Valley, Hampshire. The memorial takes the form of a two-stepped octagonal base surmounted by an octagonal plinth and a plain Latin cross with the insctription carved upon it. The memorila was first unveiled 21 September 1921 by Lord Greenway. There are seven names listed for World War 1 amd five names for World War 2.

Private 17878, 'B' Company, 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Died of wounds 16 May 1918. Aged 32. Native of Hampshire. Born Romsey, Hampshire, enlisted Lewes, Sussex. Son of Albert and Emma Broomfield; husband of Edith Broomfield, of 1, Hillside Cottage, Awbridge, Romsey. Admitted to 31st Ambulance Train 13 December 1917 with shoulder injury, discharged 13 December 1917. Buried in GONNEHEM BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Row C. Grave 23.
ELDRIDGE Alfred
Private 9342, 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Killed in action 20 October 1914. Born Landford, Wiltshire, resident Romsey, Hampshire, enlisted Winchester. Buried in PONT-DE-NIEPPE COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Nord, France. Plot I. Row A. Grave 20.
NEWELL Frank Millward
Private 46633, 1st/4th (Hallamshire) (T.F.) Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment formerly 381294, Hampshire Regiment - transferred 10 May 1918. Killed in action 13 October 1918. Aged 19. Born 5 March 1899 in Sandpit Cottage, Awbridge, Hampshire, resident Romsey, Hampshire, enlisted February 1917 Southampton. Son of Frank Milward Newell and Elizabeth Newell, of Sandpit Cottage, Awbridge, Romsey, Hampshire. Enlisted aged 17 years 360 days. Groom by trade. Height 5 feet 5½ inchess, weight 112lbs, chest 31½-33 inches. Served in United Kingdom 27 February 1917 to 28 April 1918, then in France from 29 April 1918, sailed from Folkestone 30 April 1918, arrived Etaples 30 April 1918. In the 1911 census he was aged 12, born Awbeidge, Hampshire, at school, son of Frank Millward Newell and Elizabeth newel, resident Sand Pit Cottage, Awbridge Romsey, Michelmersh, Hampshire. Buried in YORK CEMETERY, HASPRES, Nord, France. Row D. Grave 22.
NOBLE William Charles
Trimmer, S.S. "Arcadian" (Belfast) (Troop Transport), Mercantile Marine. Died at sea when the ship was sunk by an enemy submarine 15 April 1917. Aged 19. Born 1898 in Hampshire. Baptised 28 June 1896 in East & West Wellow, Hampshire. Son of William and Emma Noble, of 2, Hill Side, Awbridge, Romsey, Hampshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 14, born Romsey, Hampshire, a Farm Labourer, son of William and Emily (sic) Noble, resident Hillside, Awbridge Hill, Romsey, Michelmersh, Hampshire. No known grave. Commemorated on TOWER HILL MEMORIAL, London.
PARSONS William
Rifleman S/13687, 8th Battalion, Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own). Died of wounds 24 July 1917. Born, resident and enlisted Romsey, Hampshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 14, born Romsey, Hampshire, a Garden Boy, son of Charles and Ellen Parsons, resident Awbridge, Michelmersh, Romsey, Hampshire. Buried in LOCRE HOSPICE CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot II. Row A. Grave 27.
SILLENCE Charles James
Acting Corporal 14879, 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Killed in action 28 March 1918. Aged 40. Born Bournemouth, resident Romsey, Hampshire, enlisted Southampton. Son of the late George and Sarah Sillence, husband of Elizabeth (nee Long) Sillence, of Pound Lane, Burley, Ringwood, Hampshire, married in the July-September Quarter 1901 in Romsey Registration District, Hampshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 33, born Bournemouth, Hampshire, husband of Elizabeth Sillence, a General Labourer, resident The Round House, Awbridge, Romsey, Michelmersh, Hampshire. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 6.
VIVASH Ernest Arnold

[Not listed on SDGW] Private 35927, 15th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Killed in action 27 September 1918. Aged 18. Son of Arnold and Rose Anne Vivash, of Lower Ratlake, Awbridge, near Romsey, Hampshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 1, born Awbridge, Hampshire, son of Arnold and Rose A Vivash, resident Awbridge Hill, Awbridge, Michelmersh, Romsey, Hampshire. No kinown grave. Stoker 1st Class P/KX 115234, H.M.S. Vortigern, Royal Navy. Died at sea 15 March 1942. Born 29 February 1921 [Naval Records] in Southampton, Hampshire. Son of Frederick John and Florence Ethel Caplen, of Awbridge, Hampshire. IN the 1939 Register he was born 29 February 1920, a Builder's Labourer, resident with his parents, Frederick J and Florence E Caplan,, at Newtown, King's Somborne, Romsey and Stockbridge R.D., Hampshire. ROUD Leslie William
Fusilier 5511893, 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Killed in action in Italy 28 February 1945. Aged 21. Born and resident Hampshire. In the 1939 Register he was the son of Thomas and Mabel Round, a Faruit Farm Labourer, born 2 February 1923, resident Dunwood Gardeners Cottage, Newtown, Romsey and Stockbridge R.D., Hampshire. Buried in PADUA WAR CEMETERY, Italy. Plot II. Row E. Grave 11.
TREBLE Claude Anthony
Leading Airman (Pilot U/T) FX87490, H.M.S. Daedalus, Royal Navy attached 31 Service Flights, Royal Canadian Air Force. Killed while flying out of Kingston, Onatio, Canada, in a Harvard II, serial number AJ572, when the aircraft collided with Harvard AJ559 of 31 SFTS near Odessa 6 miles northwest of Kingston during a solo training flight 23 February 1942. Aged 19. Born 23 March 1922 in Awbridge, Hampshire. Native of Awbridge, Hampshire. Son of Ralph John and Annie Mary Treble, of Awbridge, Hampshire. In the 1939 Register he wasborn 23 March 1922, at school, son of Ralph J and Annie M Treble, resident Brockwood Danes Road, West Wellow, Romsey and Stockbridge R.D., Hampshire. Buried in KINGSTON (CATARAQUI) CEMETERY, Canada. Section G. Range 6. Grave 9.
