Guildhall Square, Portsmouth in the Octagon Room off the South Foyer
which is through the south-east entrance of the Guildhall.

pneumonia 24 October 1918. Aged 33. Born 11 March 1885 in Portsmouth.
Husband of Lily M Hayward, of 23 Brookland Road, Fratton, Portsmouth,
Hants. At enlistment he was a Detective Constable. Enlisted 2
July 1917 for the duration of the hostilities. Height 6 feet 0
inches, chest 37 inches, brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion.

Killed in action 23 November 1915. Born at Meen Mier, India, and
was from an Army family. His family moved to Coleford, Gloucestershire,
and this is where Bertie enlisted in 1903 until 1912. He joined
Portsmouth City Police about 1912. In 1913 he represented the
City Police at football and in a game against the City Tramways
Department he broke a leg. This received much coverage in the
Portsmouth newspapers of the day. He was recalled for war service
in 1914 arriving in France 16 August 1914. He married Ellen C.
Shields at Kingston Church, Portsmouth, 6 July 1915. Buried in
Dud Corner Cemetery, Loos, Pas de Calais, France. Plot IV. Row

23 September 1953 on Sulphur Mountain, Washington State, USA.
The remains of the three crewmen were buried on the mountain by
