STOCKBRIDGE
WAR MEMORIAL
World
War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information
Compiled and copyright © John Simmons & Martin Edwards 2006
The
Stockbridge memorial is in the form of a three three stepped base mounted
on this is a stone block plinth, a shaft and a cross with inscriptions
on the side of the plinth; it stands at the East End of the village
near old St Peter's Church at the junction of Romsey Road and Winchester
Road. The lettering is badly worn and bearly readable. The memorial
was designed by Sir Edward Lutyens. In 1993 the entire shaft was broken
off and was subsequently repaired. The memorial contains the names of
the men from World War 1, a second, wooden memorial in the porch of
St Peter's church contains the same names plus a further 10 who died
in World War 2. The church memorial in the porch in St Peter's Church
takes the form of a nowy headed oak board with carved inscriptions in
black and gold lettering. There are coloured badges at the top of the
board namely a coloured navy badge at the top left of the board, a coloured
army badge at the top centre of the board and coloured air force badge
at the top right corner of the board. There are also ten war graves
in Stockbridge, all in the no longer used cemetery on the Romsey Road
and immediately East of Old St. Peter's Church. They mark the burial
places of trainee pilots of the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Air Force
and the Australian Flying Corps who were killed when learning to fly
at nearby Chattis Hill Aerodrome and Lopcome Corner Aerodrome during
late 1917 and 1918. See Paul Goodwin's UK
Memorial web site for more photographs.
