WARESLEY - Roll of Honour

The memorial stands in the churchyard opposite the village pub. The memorial covers World War 1 and is fairly unique as it lists the full name, battalion, Regiment, theatre of war, date of death and age for each man. The memorial was unveiled in March 1920.

Corporal 16886, 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Died of wounds in France Wednesday 13th June 1917. Age 23. Born, resident and enlisted Waresley. Son of Frederick and Catherine Croot, of Waresley, Hunts. Buried in BETHUNE TOWN CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Grave VI. F. 5.
DENTON William Henry
Private 427086, 58th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment). Killed in France Friday 22nd September 1916. Age 24 [23 on CWGC]. Born Waresley, 15th April 1893. Son of Henry and Mary E. Denton, of Waresley, Sandy, Beds. Carpenter by trade. Single man. Height 5ft 10ins, chest 38½ins. Complexion Ruddy, eyes Blue, hair Fair. Religion Church of England. Enlisted 12th May 1915 in Regina, Canada. Commemorated on VIMY MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. HARDY Cecil William
Private 3/7347, 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. Died of wounds in France Sunday 30th May [memorial states 31st May] 1915. Age 25 [CWGC states 26]. Born Tidworth, Hanrts, enlisted Poole, Dorset, resident Sandy, Beds. Son of Charles William and Fanny Rawlins Hardy, of Ganfield [sic - probably Cranfield], Bletchley, Beds. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 37.
HARDY Leonard Charles
Private 16896, 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action in France Friday 15th September 1915. Age 21. Born Durrington, Wiltshire, enlisted Waresley, Beds , resident Cranfield, Beds. SEWELL Arthur George
21st Battalion, Machine Gun Corps. Killed in France 20th April 1918. Age 22. - only SEWELL in MCG likely is E A SEWELL, private 103935, 21st Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry).
