YELLING WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is to be found within Holy Cross Church, High Street, Yelling, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. It takes the form of two rectangular brass plaques, one above the other, set on a wooden backboard. There are six names listed for World War 1 and one for World War 2. The names here have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease of reading and research but were listed as they fell. Note: Four of the men listed below are related to one another. Ernest and Albert Currington were brothers, William Currington was their cousin and Thomas Hedge was their second cousin.

Extract from Hunts County News, 11 August 1916, page 3:

It is unofficially reported that five men from Yelling, all of the same name, were killed or wounded in a recent attack. They are Pte. Albert Currington (killed) and Ptes. William and Ernest Currington (wounded), sons of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Currington; Pte. William Currington (killed) and Pte. Walter J. Currington (wounded), sons of Mr. and Mrs. James Currington and cousins of the first-mentioned three. All were in the Bedfords.

Private 18042, "D" Company, 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 27 July 1916. Aged 21. Born Eynesbury, Huntingdonshire, resident Yelling, Huntingdonshire, enlisted Bedford. Son of Thomas and Sarah Ann Currington, of The Cross, Yelling, St. Neots, Huntingdonshire. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 2 C.
CURRINGTON Ernest
Private 18939, "D" Company, 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 28 April 1917. Aged 31. Born and resident Yelling, Huntingdonshire, enlisted Bedford. Son of Thomas and Anne Currington, of The Goss, Yelling, St. Neots; husband of Ellen Louisa Barrett (formerly Currington), of 1, South View, Yelling, St. Neots, Hunts. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France, Bay 5.
CURRINGTON William

Private 19384, 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 27 July 1916. Aged 27. Born and resident Megre, Huntingdonshire, enlisted Bedford. Son of James and Anna Maria Currington, of 1, Long Row, Yelling, St. Neots, Hunts. In the 1911 census he was aged 21, born Yelling, Huntingdonshire, a Farm Labourer, son of James and Maria Currington, resident Yelling, St Neots, Huntingdonshire & Cambridgeshire. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 2 C.

Note: the place "Megre" is how he is listed on the SDGW. The name "Megre" or "le Megre" appears in historical records, including legal documents.

HEDGE Thomas John
Corporal 19078, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 21 August 1918. Aged 28. Born and resident Yelling, Huntingdonshire, enlisted Bedford. Son of Stephen Hedge, of Yelling, St. Neots, Huntingdonshire. Awarded the Military Medal (M.M.). Buried in MONT NOIR MILITARY CEMETERY, ST. JANS-CAPPEL, Nord, France. Plot I. Row F. Grave 14.
REED Charles
Private 796730, 7th (Reserve) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Missing presumed dead 15 August 1917. Born Yelling, Huntingdonshire 12 February 1878. Resident Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. Husband of Martha Reed. Labourer by trade. Enlisted at Simcoe, Onrario, Canada, 17 April 1916, aged 38, height 5 feet 6¼ inches, chest 35-38 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, religious denomination Salvation Army. In the 1881 census he was aged 2, born Yelling, Huntingdonshire, son of James and Chalotte Reed, resident Cottage, Yelling, Huntingdonshire. On 23 October 1882 he was admitted to Yelling School, Huntingdonshire, born 12 February 1878, son of James Reed, resident Yelling, left school 3 February 1890. In the 1891 census he was aged 12, born Yelling, Huntingdonshire, an Errand Boy, son of James and Charlotte Reed, resident Main Road, Yelling, Huntingdonshire. NO known grave. REVELL Wilfred

Private G/34899, 4th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). Killed in action 3 May 1917. Aged 25. Born Toseland, Huntingdonshire, resident Yelling, Huntingdonshire, enlisted St. Neot's, Huntingdonshire. Son of Edmund and Charlotte Revell, of Toseland, Hunts; husband of Dora L. Revell, of Yelling, Hunts. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France, Bay 3.

Private D/30699, 8th (H.D.) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Died 3 April 1940. Aged 45. Son of Herbert Charles and Florence Hills; husband of Ivy Katherine Hills, of Ditchling Common. Buried in DITCHLING (ST. MARGARET OF ANTIOCH) CHURCHYARD, Sussex. Section B. Grave 40.
