The Sellindge war memorial is in the form of a plaque hanging on the wall inside the parish church. It is constructed from English oak with an ornate bronze plinth. The Second World War memorial is a small stone tablet which has been hung immediately beneath the Great War tribute.

SHRUBSOLE [Henry] George

Private 56588, 18th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Died 26th April 1918. Born Sellindge. Enlisted Canterbury. The parish tribute lists – Henry George SHRUBSOLE.

SMITH Sidney James

Private 39131, 2/7th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Formerly (21731) East Surrey Regiment. Died 29th August 1917. Born Sellindge. Enlisted Canterbury. Resided Sellindge.

WHITE Douglas

Company Sergeant Major (C.S.M) 200238, 2/4th Battalion, Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). Formerly Kent Composite Battalion (Gallipoli). Died Egypt 8th October 1918. Born Sellindge. Enlisted Sevenoaks.

BLYTHE Stewart William

Lieutenant, Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). Died 13th November 1915. The Medal Index Cards list Stewart William BLYTH.

CHAPMAN Reginald Leslie

Private 15078, 2nd Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers. Formerly (3989) The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died 22nd March 1918. Born Westwell. Enlisted Folkestone. Resided Folkestone.


This man is not recorded on the Medal Index Cards but is NOT recorded as a war casualty by the CWGC or ODGW. It therefore seems probable that he is in fact another example of a local man who died of wounds or disease after being discharged from the service - Captain (Acting Major) John Kennedy GAUNT. Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC).


Private 44697, 2nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry (D.L.I). Formerly (2214) Royal Field Artillery (Motor Machine Gun Section). Died 23rd March 1918. Born Folkestone. Enlisted Coventry. Resided Folkestone.

Private G/11460, 1st Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died 8th October 1917. Enlisted Canterbury. Resided Sellindge.

BEAN Lewis [William]

Private 19420, 4th Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Died 1st December 1917. Born Sellindge. Enlisted Marylebone, London.


Corporal 38402, 102nd Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died Monday, 11th November 1918. Buried in St. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN, Seine-Maritime, France. Section S. Plot II. Row GG. Grave 1.

Ordinary Seaman P/JX 518558, H.M.S “Collingwood”. Royal Navy (R.N). Died 18th June 1943 aged 17 years. Buried nearby in Sellindge St Mary Churchyard!

BULL Bramwell [Harry]

Lance Bombardier 1737443, 53rd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment (H.A.A). Royal Artillery (R.A). Died 22nd May 1942 aged 34 years.


Lieutenant 164399, 89 (11th Battalion, The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment). Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery (R.A). Died 10th September 1944.

KENNETT Walter James

Aircraftsman 2nd Class, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR). Died 1st March 1941 aged 32 years. Buried nearby in the St Mary Churchyard, Sellindge.


Trooper 305753, Royal Horse Guards (R.H.G). Died 2nd July 1945 aged 36 years.
