MANN Geoffrey Edward
Geoffrey was a Flying Officer (#125981) with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 540 Squadron, who at the age of 20 died in Italy July 16, 1943. He is recorded at the Milan War Cemetery (Joint grave III. B. 1). He was the son of Thomas Edwin and Mabel Annie Mann of Tunbridge Wells. He had been a resident of "Melmot, 54 Hopwood Gardens, Tunbridge Wells. ['MELMOT' was derived by taking 3 letters of Tom’s name (reversed) [MOT], and 3 letters from his wife name Mabel, from which they chose MEL, giving them MELMOT.] His name appears on a plaque at Skinners School.
MARSH Ronald Jenner
Ronald was a Lieutenant (#148959) with the Reconnaissance Corps, R. A. C., 44th (7th Battalion, The Queens), who at the age of 26 died in Egypt August 31, 1942. He is recorded at the Alamein Memorial (Column 19). He was the son of Charles Marsh and of Clara E. Marsh of Tunbridge Wells. He had been a resident of Woodland Stores, Woodland Rd., Tunbridge Wells. His name appears on a plaque at Skinners School.
MARTIN Gordon James
Gordon was a Private (#14586478) with the Dorsetshire Regiment, 1st Battalion, who at age 19 died in France June 25, 1944. He is recorded at the Hottot-Les-Bagues War Cemetery (III. F. 12). He was the son of John Edwin and Eva Esther Martin of Tunbridge Wells. He had been a resident of 2 Cromwell Rd., Tunbridge Wells.
MATHER William Hume
William was a Pilot Officer (#J/3479) with the Royal Canadian Air Force who died in Canada at the age of 25 on July 26, 1941. He is recorded at the gander War Cemetery (plot 3. row 2, grave ?). He was the son of Hume and Winifred Mather of Tunbridge Wells. He is also recorded on the plaque at St James Church, Tunbridge Wells.
MATTHEWS Glyndur Edward
Sometimes given as Glynwr. He was a flight Sergeant (#1333334) with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 15 Squadron who at the age of 19 died in the Netherlands June 29, 1943. He is recorded at the Amersfoort (Oud Leusden) Cemetery (plot 13, row 8, grave ?). He was the son of Charles James Matthews and Nellie Matthews of Tunbridge Wells. His name appears on a plaque at Skinners School and also on the plaque at St James Church, Tunbridge Wells. He was a resident of 2 Strafford Rd, Tunbridge Wells.
MAYNARD Albert Ernest
Albert was a Leading Stoker (#C/KX99264) with the Royal Navy H. M. Submarine TURBULENT. He had been a resident of 14 Dorset Rd., Tunbridge Wells. He died at age 24 March 23, 1943. He is recorded at the Chatham Naval Memorial (71. 3). He was the son of Albert E. and Alice E. Maynard of Hawkenbury, Kent.
MEPHAM Albert George
Albert had been a Sapper (#6300402) with the Royal Engineers, 554 Field Company He had been a resident of 2 Gladstone rd., Tunbridge Wells. He died at age 21 October 30, 1944. He is recorded at the Bergen-Op-Zoom War Cemetery, Netherlands (7. B. 16). He was the son of Benjamin and Clare Minnie Mepham and husband of Margaret Ann Mepham of Whithill, Crowborough, Sussex.
MERCER Leslie Harry
Leslie was a Sergeant (#1897326) with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Service, 149 Squadron who at the age of 38 died in the United Kingdom August 7, 1944 when he was shot down over the English Channel. He is recorded at the Runnymede Memorial (panel 234). He was the husband of Dorothy May Mercer (nee Weatherley 1904-1971) of Tunbridge Wells who he had married in 1937. He had been a resident of 160 Upper Grosvenor Rd., and was living in Tunbridge Wells in 1911. He was born in Tunbridge Wells October 19, 1906. He was the son of Harry George Mercer and Susannah Elizabeth Mercer (nee Harmer) and was one of four children in the family. Leslie and his wife had a son Jack.
MERCER Roy
Roy was a Sergeant (#639880) with the Royal Air Force, 107 Squadron who at the age of 18 died in France July 10, 1940. He is recorded at the Terlincthun British Cemetery (Plot 19. Row A. grave ?). He was the son of Frank and Kate Mercer of Tunbridge Wells. He had been a resident of 7 Beech St., Tunbridge Wells.
MILES Charles Fletcher
Charles was a Craftsman (#105630484) with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers who at the age of 38 died in Singapore December 5, 1944. He is recorded at the Singapore Memorial (Column 111). He was the son of George Edward and Julia Miles and the husband of Ethel Winifred Miles of Tunbridge Wells. He had been a resident of 19a Vale Rd., Tunbridge Wells.
MITHCELL Denis Roy
Denis was a Private (#T/203875) with the Royal Army Service Corps, 43 Res. M. T. Company, who at the age of 24 died in Thailand November 19, 1943. He is recorded at the Chungkai War Cemetery (6. E. 15). He was the son of Fred Percy and Jesse Elizabeth Mitchell of Tunbridge Wells. He had been a resident of 35 Frant Rd., Tunbridge Wells. His name appears on a plaque at St. Marks Church, Tunbridge Wells.
MITCHENER George James
George was a Sergeant (#1389928) with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He died at age 28 May 26, 1943. He is recorded at the Eindhoven (Woensel) General Cemetery (Plot EE. Coll, Grave 34-35). He was the son of George Henry and Florence Emily Mitchener of Brighton, Sussex.
MOLINEUX Raymond Donald
Raymond was a gunner (#903256) with the Royal Artillery. His unit was the 97 (The Kent Yeomanry) Field Regiment. He had been a resident of 33 Stephens Rd., Tunbridge Wells. He died at age 20 July 1, 1942. He is recorded at the Alamein Memorial, Egypt (Column 40). He was the son of Dennis Herbert and Elsie May Molineux of Tunbridge Wells.
MUIR William Leonard
William was a Private (#6345311) with the Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, 4th Battalion, who at the age of 26 died in France May 22, 1940. He is recorded at the Dunkirk Memorial (Column 114). Her was the son of William Alexander Muir and Lillian Muir of Tunbridge Wells and the husband of E. G. Muir of Tonbridge, Kent.
MURPHY Derrick Michael
He had been a Fusilier (#6984481) with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 6th Battalion,. He had been a resident of 2 Carlton Rd., Tunbridge Wells. He died at age 31 January 13, 1943. He is recorded at the Medjez-El-Bab War Cemetery, Tunisia (2. H. 15). He was the son of Kenrick Bourne and Florence Gertrude Murphy of Chiswick, Middlesex.
MURRAY James
James was a Sergeant (#625327) with the Royal Air Force, 22 Squadron, who at the age of 20 died in the United Kingdom September 10, 1940. He is recorded at the Runnymede Memorial (Panel 17). He was the son of John Daniel and Catherine Lilian Murray of Tunbridge Wells. He had been a resident of 103 Camden Rd., Tunbridge Wells.
MURRELLS Leslie L
Leslie was a Sergeant (#6342822) with the Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment who at age 32 died in Italy September 15, 1945. He is recorded at the Caserta War Cemetery (VIII. C. 10). He was the son of George and Ada Murrells of Tunbridge Wells and the husband of Florence Mary Murrells (nee Carey 1912-2003) of Tunbridge Wells. He had been a resident of 25 Quarry Rd., Tunbridge Wells. He was born in Tunbridge Wells April 1914 and had five siblings. He was married in the first quarter of 1938 and produced four daughters.
