In the 1911 census he was aged 19, born Salford, a Silk Warehouseman, son of Charles and Fanny machin, resident 3, Sapphire Street, Blackley Manchester, North Manchester, Lancashire. SCOUTMASTER.

Lance-Sergt. James Machin, former Scoutmaster of the Higher Blackley troop, and an employe Messrs. Haworth's paper mills, Blackley, was wounded on July 8, and died the following day. He was 25, and his parents live at 29, Middleton Old Road, Higher Blackley. Machin's father, aged 57, was wounded two months ago after 17 months' active service, and was discharged in consequence.

In the 1901 census he was aged 12, born Prstwich, Lancashire, son of Arthur and Mary Ellen Mather, resident 45 Ogden St Heaton Park, Prestwich, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 22, born Prestwich, a Clerk, son of Arthur and Elizabeth mather, resident 45, Ogden Street, Heaton Park, Prestwich, Lancashire. No known grave. Admitted to Blackley St Peter Church of England School, Gorton, Manchester 3 February 1902, resident 2 Crumpsall Vale. In the 1901 census he was aged 7, born Blackley, son of Samuel T and Mary J May, resident 2, Crumpsall Vale, North Manchester, Prestwich, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 17, born Blackley, a Dyer, son of Samuel Thomas and Mary Jane May, resident 2, Crumpsall Vale, Crumpsall, Manchester, North Manchester, Lancashire.
