In the 1901 census he was aged 14, born Sheffield, Yorkshire, a Brick Maker's Labourer, resident with his parents, Samuel and Elizabeth White (mother remarried), resident 76, Woolman Road, Blackpool, Fylde, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was serving with the Military, aged 24, born Sheffield, Yorkshire, Gunner, Royal Field Artillery, based in Nowshera, N W F P, India. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 1 A and 8 A.

Son of Maria Berry (formerly Ripley), of 3, Swainson Street, Blackpool; husband of Mary Alice (nee Haworth) Ripley, of 13, Montrose Road, Kirkham, Lancashire, married 29 December 1909 in Blackpool; two children. Served in France 14 February 1917 to 5 April 1917. Discharged as being no longer physically fit for war service 28 June 1917 at Southport due to paralysis of R. L. Tran. nerves. Assigned Silver Badge No. 205696, 11 July 1917. Died due to cerebral haemorrhage and exhaustion, aggravated by Military Service 29 August 1917.
