Native of Blackpool, Lancashire. Son of Thomas and M. E. Titchener, of Blackpool. Mobilised 5 August 1914. Involved in a flying accident at Hendon 1 March 1917 while flying a Caudron, he was wounded. Died of Erysipelas (Erysipelas is a superficial form of cellulitis, a potentially serious bacterial infection affecting the skin) 10 March 1918. Aged 40. Born 22 February 1878 in Whitewell, near Clitheroe, Lancashire. Son of the late John and Maria Thomas [sic], of Warley Rd., North Shore, Blackpool; husband of Esther Tommas, of 24, Durley Rd., Bloomfield Rd., Blackpool. William Tommas was baptised 5 May 1878 at Whitewell, St Michael. In the 1901 census William Tommas was aged 23, born Whitewell, Yorkshire, an Assistant Auctioneer, resident with his widowed mother, Hannah Maria Tommas, at 45, Warley Road, Blackpool, Fylde, Lancashire. Married Esther Cunliffe 25 May 1901 in Blackpool, Holy Trinity at which time he was a Hotel Manager resident 7 West View Close Street, Blackpool. Emigrated to Canada in 1911. Attested 23 April 1915 in Montreal, Canada, aged 37 years 2 months, embodied 9 October 1915, Baggage Man by trade, married, height 5 feet 9 inches, weight 213lbs, chest 45½ inches, fair complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair, religious denomination Church of England. Arrived in England 19 June 1915. Admitted to Canadian Red Cross Specialist Hospital, Buxton, Derbyshire (Hermiplegia) 14 September 1917. transferred 22 November 1917 to 5 Canadian General Hopital, Liverpool, invalided to Canada for further medical treatment 16 December 1917, no longer fit for war service. His service records show a series of illness when he spent a period of time in and out of hospital. On 9 January 1918 the Sapdina Military Hospital, Toronto, reported he was suffering from Hemapegia; 'Complete paralysis left arm. Partial of left leg and facial muscles. Heart apex 5" from mid line. Mitral systolic and aortic diastolic murmurs. Arthritis left knee.' Buried in TORONTO (PROSPECT) CEMETERY, Ontario, Canada. Grave reference G.W.V.A. 16.
