DOWNHAM AND TWISTON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Michelle Linden 2018

The Downham and Twiston memorial takes the form of a wall mounted, rectangular, plaque consisting of contrasting marble borders with squares to the corners and a moulded laurel wreath and ribbon above with the inscription and names highlighted in black lettering. There was also a memorial in the form of a shrine with cornice and triangular top with the same names listed for World War 1; this memorial has not been found. The memorial was dedicated by the Bishop of Whalley Dr Rawstorne and unveiled by Mrs Assheton, of Downham Hall, 7 August 1921; it lists seven names of those who gave their lives. In addition within St. Leonard's Church, Chatburn Road, Downham there are two framed rolls of honour for World War 1 listing the 39 personnel who served 1914-1919 and these are contained in a larger frame with a decorative border, and the shields of the four provinces of the United Kingdom; at the lower edge of the first roll of honour are a crossed Union Jack and White Ensign; 39 names are listed. A further roll of honour hangs nearby in the form of a rectangular framed, and glazed, roll of honour with a decorative foliate border and a crown surmounting the dates of World War 2; list lists the names of 23 persons who served in the Second World War. Those on the World War 1 Roll of Honour marked ' ' are listed on the memorial as well.
