LINDAL IN FURNESS STWAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is located on the East wall of the South Crossing in St Peter's Church, Church Close, Lindal-in-Furness. The d War 1 memorial takes the form of a brass plaque with most lettering in black but certain lettering in red, listing 18 men from the parish who gave their lives in the war. There is a further memorial on a tabletop to one man who gave his life in World War 2. The names are listed in year of death order but have been sorted here into alphabetical order for ease of reading, the year is in the start of the description.

ASHBURNER Daniel
1916 - Second Lieutenant. 13th Battalion, Kings (Liverpool) Regiment. Died 10th December 1916. Son ofLancelot and Elizabeth Ashburner (nee Rose). Husband of Jane Ann Ashburner (nee Watson). Born1880 Dalton in Furness. Previous service Scots Guards. Commemorated Bertrancourt Military Cemetery. 2.A.11.
CRISPE Benjamin
1916 - Private2145. 4th Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment. Killed in action 8th August 1916. Son of William B and Alice Crispe (nee Woodhouse). 1895 Lower Allithwaite and enlisted Lindal in Furness. Commemorated Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 5D and 12B.
HASTINGS Gilbert
1917 - Petty Officer 202199, Royal Navy. HMS Vanguard (Battleship, sunk by accidental internal explosion). Killed in action 9th July 1917. Son of William and Elizabeth Mary Hastings (nee Slater). Born 6th May 1883 Ulverston and resident 4 The Green, Lindal in Furness (as probate). Commemorated Chatham Naval Memorial. 21.
HOGGARTH William
1917 - Lance Corporal 16660. 8th Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment. Killed in action 9th April 1917. Son of Thomas F and Sarah Hoggarth (nee Lewis). Husband of Ethel Ellen Hoggarth (nee Leck). Born 1881 Lindal in Furness and enlisted Ulverston. Commemorated Feuchy Chapel British Cemetery. I.C.16.
LOWTHER John
1915 - Private 1037. 9th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Killed in action 18th October 1915. Son of William and Mary Jane Lowther (nee Nelson). Husband of Mary J Lowther (former name unknown, marriage not proven. Now wife of Charles Gardiner). Born 8th July 1883 Ulverston, enlisted Blaydon and resident High Thornley DUR. Commemorated Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension. II.A.24.
LOWTHER Thomas
1918 - Thomas Benson Lowther. Sergeant 7549. 4th Regiment, South African Infantry. Died 3rd January 1918. Son of William H and Elizabeth M Lowther (nee Watson). Husband of Mary E Lowther (nee Lowther). Born 1889 Lindal in Furness. Commemorated Fins New British Cemetery. III.F.3.

1917 - Private 243065. 5th Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment. Killed in action 23rd July 1917. Son of Thomas and Hannah Margaret Slater (nee Slater). Born 1896 Dalton in Furness and enlisted Dalton in Furness. Commemorated Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery. VIII.A.4.

Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Watson (nee Ashburner). Born Lindal in Furness, enlisted Whitehaven CUL and resident Lindal in Furness. Commemorated Arras Memorial. Bay 6.
WILKINSON John
1918 - John Charles Wilkinson. Private 32645. 2/5th Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment. Died of wounds 2nd October 1918. Son of Robert and Eliza Ann (believed Elizabeth Lawrence but unverified). Born Dalton in Furness and enlisted Ulverston. Commemorated Sunken Road Cemetery. III.F.13.
WILLIAMS William
1918 - William Ernest Williams (as CWGC). Private 200307. 4th Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment, attached 164th Trench Mortar Battery. Killed in action 18th March 1918. Son of William Henry and Emily Williams (As CWGC. Nee Corkhill, widow of Edward Wilson. Marry 1898). Born c1896 (birth record not proven) Lindal in Furness (as CWGC, born Liverpool as census) and enlisted Ulverston. Commemorated Gorre British and Indian Cemetery. VI.E.15.
