Second Lieutenant, 10th Battalion attached to 7th Battalion, Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire Regiment). Killed in action near Kut 11th January 1917. Aged 24. Son of the late Charles and Alice Naismith, of Scarfoot, Underbarrow, Kendal, Westmorland. Born 1892 in Crumpsall, Manchester. Educated at Bowdon College. Manchester University: 1909; Student, Modern Languages; London University and Strassburg; Assistant Master, The Craig, Windermere. Enlisted 1st September 1914, 2ist Battalion (University & Public Schools), Royal Fusiliers. Gazetted 1st May 1915. In the 1901 census he was aged 9, born Manchester, son of Charles and Alice Naismith, resident 7, Seymour Road, North Manchester, Prestwich, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 19, born Manchester, a Civil Service Student, son of Charles and Alice Naismith, resident Ingleton, Lindop Road, Hale, Cheshire. Buried in AMARA WAR CEMETERY, Iraq. Plot XXIV. Row C. Grave 12.

Leonard

Private 21084, 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Killed in action at Loos 8th October 1915. Aged 31. Son of Richard Needham (J.P.), of Ashdale, Stalybridge, Cheshire and the late Harriet Neddham. Born 1884 in Stalybridge, Cheshire. Baptised in Staleybridge, St Paul, Cheshire 9th March 1884, son of Richard and Harriet Needham. Educated at Manchester Grammar School; King William's College, Isle of Man. Manchester University: 1900; Student, Medicine. Pharmacist. Enlisted December 1914 in Buxton. In the 1891 census he was aged 7, born Stalybridge, Cheshire, son of Richard and Harriet Neddham, resident Mottram Road, Stayley, Ashton under Lyne, Cheshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 16, born Stalybridge, a pupil (Student (Engineer)), baording at Dalton Hall, Conyngham Road, South Manchester, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 27, born Stalybridge, a Chemist and Druggist, son of Richard Needham (a widower), resident Ashdale, Mottram Road, Stalybridge, Cheshire. No known grave. Commemorated on LOOS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 5 to 7.

NEILL, MC

Geoffrey William

Lieutenant, 57 Training Squadron, Royal Air Force and 6th Battalion, Leinster Regiment. Accidentally killed in an air collision whilst flying in Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2e, serial no. B3662, over the desert at Abu-Souer, near Ismailia 8th June 1918. Aged 21. Son of John and M. J. Neill, of The Glen, 52, Albert Rd., Whalley Range, Manchester. Born 1896 in Marple, Cheshire. Educated at Hulme Grammar School. Manchester University: 1914; Student, Chemistry; Officer Training Corps, October 1914 to December 1914. Gazetted 2nd December 1914. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). In the 1901 census he was aged 4, born Marple Cheshire, son of John and Mary Jane Neill, resident 29, Orchard Road, St Annes on the Sea, Fylde, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 14, born Marple, Cheshire, at school, son of John and Mary Jane Neill, resident 52, Albert Road, Whalley Range, Manchester, South Manchester, Lancashire. Buried at ISMAILIA WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY, Egypt. Plot B. Grave 120.

The cause of the accident was in our opinion due to an error in the judgment of both pilots whilst fighting in the air causing a collision. The Court can place no blame based on the evidence put before them, on any person or persons. They are satisfied that both machines were in good order.

Second Lieutenant, 14th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Killed in action near Kut between 4th and 5th April 1916. Son of John and Rosa Newell, of Arnewood, 3, Bennett Road, Crumpsall. Born 1889 in Manchester. Baptised 2nd March 1890 in Cheetham, St Luke, Manchester, son of John and Rosa Newell. Educated at Manchester Grammar School. Manchester University: 1912; Student, Law; Officer Training Corps, December 1914 to January 1915. Practice as Solicitor in Manchester. Gazetted January 1915. In the 1901 census he was aged 11, born in Manchester, son of John and Rosa Newell, resident 381, Waterloo Road, North Manchester, Prestwich, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 21, born Cheetham, Manchester, an Articled Clerk and Solicitor, son of John and Rosa Newell, resident 381, Waterloo Road, Cheetham, Manchester, North Manchester, Lancashire. No known grave. Commemorated on BASRA MEMORIAL, Iraq. Panel 14 and 62.

Captain, 4th Battalion (Territorial), East Lancashire Regiment. Killed in action at Passchendaele 9th October 1917. Aged 24. Elder son of James and Annie Bruin Norcross, of 1, Lynton Rd., Heaton Moor, Stockport. Born 1892 in Heaton Moor. Baptised 5th March 1893 in Heaton Moor, St Paul, Cheshire, son of James and Annie Bruin Norcross. Educated at Darwen Secondary School; Manchester Grammar School. Manchester University: 1910; B.Sc. (1st Class Honours Mathematics) 1913; Officer Training Corps, October 1910 to October 1914. Gazetted 1914. In the 1901 census he was aged 8, born heaton Chapel, lancashire, a schoolboy, son of James and Annie bruin Norcross, resident 49, Sudell Road, Darwen, Blackburn, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 18, born heaton Moor, Lancashire, a Student, son of James and Annie Norcross, resident 1, Lynton Road, Heaton Moor, Heaton Norris, Cheshire & Lancashire. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 77 to 79.

Albert Armitage

Second Lieutenant, 1st/7th Battalion (Territorial), Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment). Died of wounds at Thiepval 15th August 1916. Aged 20. Son of Robert Hewitt and Sarah H. Nuttall, of Milnrow, Lancashire. Born 1896 in Milnrow. Educated at Huddersfield High School; Huddersfield Technical College. Manchester University: 1914; Student, Mechanical Engineering; Officer Training Corps, October 1914 to September 1915. National Gas Engine Co. Ltd., Ashton-Under-Lyne. Gazetted 23rd August 1915. Listed on the National Gas Engine Co Ltd Roll of Honour. Buried at FORCEVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY AND EXTENSION, Somme, France. Plot 2. Row D. Grave 1.

Private 25586, 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Killed in action at Bienvilliers 2nd June 1918. Aged 21. Son of Joshua and Margaret Nuttall, of 413, Holcombe Rd., Helmshore, Lancs. Born 1897 in Haslingden, Lane. Educated at Helmshore County School; Haslingden Secondary School. Manchester University: 1915; Student, Honours Maths. Enlisted 29th February 1916 in Haslingden. In the 1911 census he was aged 13, born Haslingden, son of Joshua and Margaret Nutall, resident 413, Holcombe Road, Haslingden, Lancashire.
