Son of Bertram Morphet Scammell and Olive Scammell, of Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester. B.A. In the 1911 census he is listed as Cosson John Scammel (sic), aged 1, born Manchester, son of Bertram Morphet and Olive, Scammel (sic), grandson of Walter Cosson and Helen Rebecca Witpen, resident 59 Albany Road Chorlton-Cum-Hardy, South Manchester, Lancashire. Cremated and commemorated in MANCHESTER CREMATORIUM, Lancashire. Panel 20.

Son of Abraham and Rachel Shafsby, of Southport. Buried in EAST LONDON (EAST BANK) CEMETERY, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Jewish Section. Grave 444.

Lance Corporal 3522256, 2nd/5th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Killed in action 17th July 1944. Aged 35. Born and resident Oldham. Son of Thomas and Ada (formerly Shaw) Duffy, of Oldham, Lancashire; husband of Bridget (nee Leonard) Shaw, of Oldham, married 1937 in Oldham Registration District, Lancashire. In the 1911 census he was aged 2, born Oldham, son of Ada Shaw (a widow), resident 6, Back Hope Street, Oldham, Lancashire. Buried in FONTENAY-LE-PESNEL WAR CEMETERY, TESSEL, Calvados, France. Flying Officer 153642, 625 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 15th January 1945. Aged 23. Born 3rd September 1921. Son of Harold and Mary Shenton, of Sale, Cheshire. In the 1939 Register he was a Student, son of Harold and Mary Shenton, resident 26, Hayling Road, Sale M.B., Cheshire. No known grave. Commemorated at RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL, Surrey. Panel 267.
SHUTTLEWORTH
Donald Anthony
Aircraftman 2nd Class 1074216, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died as a japanese prisoner of War 29th November 1943 captured in Java; died when the ship he was sailing in, Suez Maru, was sunk by USS Bonefish, off the Kangean Islands; the Japanese Captain Kawano ordered the shooting of the prisoners in the water and from 14.15 to 16.30 the Minesweeper W.12 massacred the survivors using machine gun and rifles. Aged 32. Born 28th May 1911 in Burnley, Lancashire. Son of Thomas Edmond and Margaret Shuttleworth, of 57, Corn Road, Burnley, Lancashire. B.Sc. (Manchester). In the 1939 Register he was an Unemployed Science Graduate, B.Sc. in Mathematics and Physics, son of Margaret Shuttleworth, resident 57 Colne Road, Burnley C.B., Lancashire. No known grave. Commemorated at SINGAPORE MEMORIAL, Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore. Column 430.

Sub-Lieutenant (A), H.M.S. Indomitable, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Died 23rd October 1941. Assigned as Sub-Lieutenant 12th July 1941. No known grave. Commemorated on LEE-ON-SOLENT MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Bay 2, Panel 7.

Captain 111791, Royal Army Medical Corps. Died on service in the Middle East 11th May 1941. Aged 39. Born 25th March 1902 in Wigan, resident Wigan. Son of James and Annie Starr; husband of Elizabeth Mary Starr, of Ellwood, Victoria, Australia. M.B., Ch.B. In the 1911 census he was aged 9, born Wigan, son of James and Annie May Starr, resident 95, Swinley Road, Wigan, Lancashire. Admitted 16th September 1913 into Wigan Grammar School, son of J. Starr (a Printer & Bookbinder), resident 95, Swinley Road, left 21 December 1916 to go to Manchester Grammar School. Buried in CAIRO WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY, Egypt. Plot K. Grave 24.

Flight Sergeant (Pilot) 1145662, 102 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 10th August 1943. Aged 20. Son of John Everard Storey and Olive Marguerite Storey, of Prestbury. Buried in PRESTBURY (ST. PETER) CHURCHYARD, Cheshire. New ground. S.E. Portion. Row 19. Grave 2.
STRANGE
Nevill Hilder

Pilot Officer (Navigator) 77486, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 14th September 1940. Aged 31. Son of Hilder and Alice Strange, of Manchester. M.Sc. (Manchester). Consulting Engineer, of Manchester, expert on Motor Engineering matters. Used as an expertt witness in several court cases. Cremated 19 September 1940 and commemorated in MANCHESTER CREMATORIUM, Lancashire. Panel 21.

Extract from Manchester Guardian Thursday 19th September 1940:

In September on active service Pilot Officer Nevill STRANGE R.A.F.V.R. only son of Mr and Mrs Hilder STRANGE of Holme Road, Didsbury. Service at Manchester Crematorium on Friday September 20 at twelve noon. Inquiries Messrs Kendal Milne and Co.

In the 1911 census he was newborn, born Manchester, son of Jacob and Fanny Strauss, resident 128, Oldham Road, Ancoats, Manchester, Lancashire. Buried in YABA CEMETERY, Nigeria. Plot 4. Row E. Joseph Rothwell
Able Seaman D/JX 394951, H.M.S. Jamaica, Royal Navy. Died from asphyxiation by drowning in the Clyde Estuary, suicide whilst the balance of his mind was disturbed, 16th June 1944. Aged 21. Born 14th January 1923 in Stalybridge, Cheshire. Son of Josiah and Nora Sykes, of Stalybridge, Cheshire. LL.B., Hons. (Manchester). No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon.
