LANCASHIRE AND YORKSHIRE RAILWAY WWI WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Gill Cannell and Andrew Dishman 2025

The Manchester Victoria Station memorial to the men from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in Worlfd War 1 is to be found on the left wall of westermost station entrance, Victoria Railway Station, Victoria Station Approach, Manchester. It takes the form of an impressive cast bronze memorial installed below a tiled map of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway's network. The principal towns and cities it served are acknowledged in small shields placed above each of the seven panels which carry the Names. The panels have bound laurel leaves as a border to the sides and top, and have a rose in the top corners. The main dedication is cast across the top of the seven name panels. A Biblical text is incised below the names. On the left of the panels is a cast depiction of St Michael vanquishing the Devil, and to the right is a cast depiction of St George slaying the dragon. Each is flanked by torches, at the centre of which is a wreath, within which words of encouragement are cast. In front of the above are set four cast bronze square seats, two under each of the side panels, and between them is a row of cast, square section bollards, set below each of the name panels. Thre are 1,464 names listed.

The title "Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway" was adopted by the Manchester & Leeds Railway in July, 1847 following its absorption of a number of earlier local railways, the largest of which was the Manchester and Leeds Railway. See the Science Museum Group page detailing the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway 1847 - 1922. There are also pages dedicated to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Trust.
