SHORE |
Walter |
A
newspaper item gives that on the 30 November 1918, Corporal Walter
Shore (Canadian Engineers) died in a Casualty Clearing Station in
France of Influenza, Corporal Shore leaving a widow, his father
living at 75 Halifax Road, Littleborough. His name is listed on
the Littleborough Cenotaph as well as the Victoria Street Wesleyan
Chapel War Memorial. The 1901 Census includes a Shore family at
13 Old Mill, Ealees where Walter (a Machine Stocking Knitter –
Woollen) lived with his parents John and Emma and brother and sister.
This address is not too far from 75 Halifax Road.
The CWGC records a Pte Walter Shore WR/31945 who died on 29th November
1918. He had served with the Royal Engineers, 222nd Transport Company.
There is no record of a Walter Shore in the Canadian Army. Whilst
the information from the local newspaper doesn’t conform to
the other records, the link to an Engineering Regiment and the DOD
after the Armistice would suggest that it is one and the same person.
