WIGAN, WALLGATE STATION WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial listed here was on sale on ebay. This was bought by a member of the Great War Forum, and with their help the information below has been gathered. Wigan Wallgate Station is the depot, operated by the Lancashire & Yorshire Railway from 1896, the memorial being located in the Loco Sheds. At least 6 of the men named originate from Wigan born there or enlisted there. The plaque is marked - John M Stamper 1923 - Reg No - 659624. John Mallinson Stamper of Wigan was a House Painter (in 1911).

Private. Cleaner, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Sydney Appleby was Gunner 12243, “A” Battery, 86th Brigade, Royal Artillery. Killed in action 25 July 1916. Born and enlisted Wigan. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 1 A and 8 A.

GREGORY James Shacklady
[Gunner on memorial] Bombardier 12244, 463rd Battery, 179th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Died 25 February 1919. Aged 23. Son of William and Margaret Gregory, of Wigan, Lancs. Served 4 years 6 months. Weigher, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. In the 1911 census he was an errand boy, aged 16, born Wigan, resident 7 Lathams yard, Millgate, Wigan. Buried in ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot LXXII. Row C. Grave 36.
HENSHAW Joseph
Bombardier 173165, 73rd Company, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died 30 October 1918. Cleaner, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Did not seek permission to enlist. No known grave. Commemorated on KIRKEE 1914-1918 MEMORIAL, India. Face 2.
LYONS Arthur
Private 770, 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Killed in action 26 August 1914. Born and enlisted Wigan. Labourer, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. Buried in ESNES COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Nord, France. Grave I.

Private, 5th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Cleaner, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
REGAN Albert Edward
Private 1304, 1/5th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Killed in action at Gallipoli 28 May 1915. Aged 21. Born Newtown, Wigan, enlisted Wigan. Son of William and Annie Regan; husband of Elizabeth Annie Regan, of 53, Gleenway Rd., Higher Tranmere, Birkenhead. Cleaner, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. In 1911 he was a Pit brow Boy, aged 17, born newtown, Wigan, resident 153 Ormskirk Road Newtown, Wigan. No known grave. Commemorated on HELLES MEMORIAL, Turkey. Panel 158 to 170.
SMITH Daniel
Private 32504, Royal Army Medical Corps. Died 5 August 1915. Aged 31. Born Lancaster, enlisted Wigan. Son of Daniel and Ellen Smith, of Parbold, Lancs; husband of Sarah Smith, of 48, Warrington Rd., Lower Terrace, Wigan, Lancs. Fireman, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. In 1911 census he was a Railway Engine Stoker, aged 26, born Parbold, Lancashire, resident 50 Warrington Road, Lower Ince, near Wigan. Buried in WIMEREUX COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot I. Row J. Grave 17.
TALBOT William
[Sergeant on memorial] Lance Sergeant 2033, 1/5th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Killed in action at Gallipoli 4 June 1915. Aged 34. Born St. Luke’s, Orrell, enlisted Wigan. Brother of Robert Talbot, of 10, Woodhouse Lane, Wigan. Coalman, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. In 1911 census he was aged 30, a Coal Miner Hewer, born Wigan, living at 141 Woodhouse Lane, Wigan; his brother Robert was a Railway Engine Stoker. No known grave. Commemorated on HELLES MEMORIAL, Turkey. Panel 158 to 170.
WOODCOCK Abraham
Private 43903, 18th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Died 28 December 1916. Enlisted Wigan. Fireman, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. In 1911 he was a railway Fireman Loco, aged 30, born Wigan, married to Ellen with one son and two daughters, resident 14 Second Avenue, Wigan, Lancashire. Did not seek permission to enlist. Buried in CROISILLES BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot I. Row G. Grave 17.
