APPLEBY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial stands on Ermine Street, Appleby, at the junction of Ermine Street and Paul Lane and takes the form of an oak tree with a dedicatory granite stone of remembrance placed in front of it. There are seven names for World War 1 and three for World War 2. The tree was planted, and the memorial dedicated, on 10th November 1923. Details appeared in the Scunthorpe Star 17th November 1923.

Possibly Private 18274. 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 28th November 1916, aged 33 years. Son of William and (the late) Charlotte Brocklesby of Scunthorpe, Lincs. Husband of Elizabeth Brocklesby of Mill Hill, Glentham, Lincs. Born Louth, enlisted Scunthorpe and resident Glentham, Lincs. Commemorated HAMEL MILITARY CEMETERY, Beaumont-Hamel. II.E.7.

BRUMTON

George

Cannot identify Brumton. Possibly Private 41814. 6th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment, formerly 101212 Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Died 7th August 1918, aged 18 years. Son of George and Fanny Brumpton of Searby, Lincs. Born Limber and enlisted Lincoln, Lincs. Commemorated BEACON CEMERTY, Sailly-Laurette. III.C.3.

BUTTERICK

Charles

Private 26912, 7th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment. Killed in action 4 October 1917. Aged 22. Son of Arthur & Mary Miriam Buttrick of Carr Lane, Appleby. No known grave. Commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial. Panel 90 to 92 & 162 to 162A.

HUTCHINSON

Thomas

Private 307988. 7th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Duke of Wellingtons). Killed in action 13th April 1918, aged 37 years. Son of Thomas and Maria Hutchinson of Appleby, Lincs. Born Appleby, Lincs, enlisted Hull, Yorks and resident Appleby, Lincs. Commemorated CABARET-ROUGE BRITISH CEMETERY, Souchez. XX.D.26.

JOHNSON

Harold Parker

Private 1425. 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 18th October 1917. Born Appleby, enlisted Grimsby and resident Brocklesby, Lincs. Commemorated WELSH CEMETERY (Caesars Nose). II.A.18.

Sapper WR/327509. Inland Waterways and Docks, Royal Engineers. Died home 23rd October 1918, aged 34 years. Husband of Maria Johnson of Appleby, Lincs. Born Appleby, enlisted Scunthorpe and resident Appleby, Lincs. Commemorated APPLEBY (St Bartholomew) CHURCHYARD.

Possibly William Pool. Private 37183. 8th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, formerly 2632 Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 25th October 1916. Son of Mrs F Pool of Twigmore, Scawby, Lincs. Born Alkborough and enlisted Scunthorpe, Lincs. Commemorated GRANDCOURT ROAD CEMETERY, Grandcourt. A.77.
