BLANKNEY ST OSWALD WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorials are located in St. Oswald's Church, Blankney, Lincolnshire. The ornate World War 1 memorial is built up from white marble, and includes carved coats of arms and heraldic emblems. The plainer World WaRr 2 memorial below it is in a brownish marble. Both memorials list the full names and units of the casualties in incised black lettering. They are attached to the north wall of the nave, and surmounted by the St George and Union flags.

CARR Robert
Sapper 489861 (or WR/194382), Railway Operating Division, Royal Engineers, formerly 2382, Lincs Yeomanry. (R.O.D.). Died of wounds, Palestine, 24 August 1918. Buried in Grave XXXII. C6, Gaza War Cemetery. Born 29 April 1892 Blankney, bpt 14 August 1892 Metheringham, son of William and Elizabeth (née Wilkinson) Carr. Enlisted at Lincoln.
EDWARDS Walter Harold
Lance Corporal 7183, 8th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. Missing, presumed dead 19 August 1915, age 25. No known grave. Commemorated on Panel 33 to 35, Helles Memorial. Born Dawley, Salop, bpt 5 February 1890 Dawley, only son of William Edward and Adelaide Lucy (née Hayward) Edwards, of Blankney, Lincoln. Enlisted at Newcastle-On-Tyne.
GOSLING Ernest Wrighton
Private 40388 4th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment, formerly 25156, South Staffs Regt. Died of wounds 12 April 1918, age 21. Buried in Grave I. C. 2, La Kreule Military Cemetery, Hazebrouck. Son of John and Elizabeth Gosling, of Thorpe Ginley, Martin Dales, Lincolnshire, late of Blankney Fen. Born Tanvats, Metheringham, Lincs, enlisted at Lincoln. Previously farm worker.
HOUGHTON John William
Private 40481, 18th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own). Killed in action 3 May 1917. Buried in Grave VI. E. 4, Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-en-Gohelle. Born Swineshead, Lincs, 30 July 1891 (SDGW says Metheringham), bpt 20 September 1891 Swineshead, son of Arthur and Emma (née Gosling) Houghton, enlisted at Lincoln. Formerly 24931, 3/4 Lincs Regt. In 1911 a farm waggoner in Blankney.
KEY Edward Raynor (or Rayner)
Private 28159, 7th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 23 March 1918, age 20. No known grave. Commemorated on Bay 3 and 4, Arras Memorial. Born 13 December 1897 Kensington, Middx., enlisted Sleaford, Lincs. Son of Edward Rayner Key and Mary (née Hancock) Key, of Blankney Fen, Lincs.
MANNING Harry James
Lance Corporal 11684, 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 5 November 1915, age 25. Buried in Grave I. F. 188, Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension (Nord). Born Ovington, Norfolk, 1890 (incorrect in SDGW), bpt 15 June 1890, Ovington. Enlisted at Metheringham, Lincs, resided Elveden, Norfolk. Son of Harry and Annie Manning, of "Summerpit," Elveden, Thetford, Norfolk. In 1911 an estate carpenter in Blankney.
OMEROD Clement Arthur
Both CWGC and SDGW give surname as Ormerod. Private 26972 (SDGW has 26970), 6th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's), formerly 9/23117, Lincs Regt.. Killed in action 16 September 1916. No known grave. Commemorated on Pier and Face 2A, Thiepval Memorial. Born 1895 Colne, Lancs, bpt 28 September 1895 Colne St Bartholomew, son of Seth and Eliza (née Richardson) Ormerod. Enlisted at Lincoln, resided Stixwould, Lincs. In 1911 a farm labourer in Blankney, nephew of James and Mary Marshall.
PRIDGEON Ernest John
Private 14564, 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 26 September 1915, age 23. No known grave. Commemorated on Panel 31 to 34, Loos Memorial. Born 7 May 1892 Boothby Heath, Lincs, son of Edward Johnson Pridgeon and Eliza (née Smith) Pridgeon, of High St, Navenby, Lincoln. Enlisted at Lincoln, resided Blankney Grange, Lincs.
RAWDING William Thomas
Trooper 2022, 1st/1st Lincolnshire Yeomanry. Accidentally drowned at Oakley Park 3 July 1915, age 20. Buried in Edmondthorpe (St. Michael) Churchyard, Leics. Born Gt Casterton, Rutland, son of William Renshaw Rawding and Mary Annie (née Jackson) Rawding, of Catmos Lodge, Teigh, Oakham, Rutland. Enlisted at Lincoln.
ROOK William
Private 46841, 2nd/5th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 21 March 1918, age 21. Buried in Noreuil German Cemetery (Mem. 5), then in Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy. Born 1896 Dunstan Heath, Lincs, son of George Lawson Rook and Elizabeth (née Miles) Rook, of Manor Farm, Bassingham, Lincoln. Enlisted at Sleaford, Lincs, resided at Navenby, Lincs, pre-war occupation farm labourer.
ROSSINGTON Edward Thomas
Private 35824, 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 13 June 1917, age 25. Buried in Grave I.R.25, Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe. Born 1891, bpt 12 July 1891 Blankney, son of Henry and Hannah (née Paske) Rossington, of Blankney. Enlisted at Derby, resided at Blankney, pre-war occupation gardener.
ROSSINGTON William Henry
Private 202072, 4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 15 April 1918, age 21. No known grave. Commemorated on Panel 3, Ploegsteert Memorial. Born 1896, bpt 13 September 1896 Blankney, son of Henry and Hannah (née Paske) Rossington, of Blankney, Lincoln. Enlisted at Ruskington, Lincs, resided at Blankney, pre-war occupation carpenter.

CARTWRIGHT Edwin
Sergeant 561497, 81 Repair and Salvage Unit, Royal Air Force. Taken prisoner on 8 March 1942 Java, believed to have died of malaria at PoW Camp, Sandakan, Borneo, 15 February 1945, age 33. No known grave. Commemorated on Column 451, Singapore Memorial. Born 19 March 1911 York. bpt St Saviour's York 4 April 1911, son of Thomas and Louisa Amelia Cartwright. Husband of Sybil (née Midwinter) Cartwright, of Stoney Cross, Blankney. Joined RAF in 1927.
SEWELL Leslie Walter
Private 14208558 Dorsetshire Regiment attached to 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 26 July 1943, age 22. No known grave. Commemorated on Panel 8, Cassino Memorial. Born 7 February 1921, son of Walter and Clara (née Gilbert) Sewell, of Martin, Lincs. Pre-war occupation farm labourer.
SMITH George
Lance Corporal 2660142, 5th Battalion, Coldstream Guards. Died 16 February 1945, age 24. Buried in Grave 12.A.1, Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany. Son of Thomas and Annie Smith, of Blankney.
