The Coleby memorial is to be found in the grounds of All Saints Church, Church lane, Coleby and takes the form of a stone cross surmounting tapering column which stands on a tapering stone plinth which bears names and inscription, the whole stands on a two-stepped stone base. The memorial was unveiled in 1920 and contains 10 names for World War 1 only.

Private 8340, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 2 February 1915. Born Norwich, Norfolk, enlisted Lincoln and resident Sleaford, Lincolnshire. Buried in KEMMEL CHATEAU MILITARY CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Row B. Grave 31. Also listed on the Cranwell War Memorial

ANDREW Leonard [Harvey]

[Andrews on CWGC] Private 55295. Lincolnshire Yeomanry. Died of wounds in Egypt 28 December 1917. Born 26 February 1897, baptised 4 April 1897, son of Edwin and Elizabeth Andrew, resident Short Ferry, Fiskerton; his father was a farmer. Enlisted Lincoln and resident Fiskerton, Lincolnshire. Buried in ALEXANDREA (Hadra) WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY, Egypt. Plot D. Grave 279.

BODY Frank

Acting Lance Corporal 32924. 26th Field Company, Royal Engineers. Killed in action 30 May 1918. Aged 23. Born York, Yorkshire and enlisted Lincoln, Lincolnshire. Son of Henry and Mary J (Annie on separate memorial) Body of Linton House, Coleby, Lincolnshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 5, born Sheffield, Yorkshire, son of Henry and Annie Body, resident Village Street, Coleby, Lincoln, Lincolnshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 16, born Coleby, Lincolnshire, [place of birth is incorrect] a servant, a Horseman on farm, working for Charles Trafford, resident Coleby, Lincolnshire. Buried in CAMBRIN MILITARY CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Row O. Grave 29.

FISHER Harry aka Henry

Private 27243, 1st Battalion, King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) formerly 3896, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 21 October 1916. Aged 21. Resident Caythorpe, Grantham, enlisted Sleaford. Buried in LA NEUVILLE BRITISH CEMETERY, CORBIE, Somme, France. Plot II. Row F, Grave 33.

Extract from Grantham Journal - Saturday 18 November 1916, page 3:

Pte. HARRY FISHER. Formerly of Caythorpe.

Information reached Mr. and Mrs. Fisher, of Coleby, last week, that their son, Pte Harry Fisher, of the Royal Lancasters. succumbed to his wounds in hospital, on October 28th. The deceased soldier, who was 21 yearn of age, was in the employ of Mrs. Hunt, Boothhy Pagnell, and was a devoted member of the Parish Church choir. His home was at Caythorpe. He enlisted in May, 1913. in the I.incolnshire Regiment, and about seven weeko ago was sent to the front, being transferred to the Royal Lancasters. A large number of sympathetic messages have been received by his parents from their son's chums, and they are also the recipients of a token of sympathy from their Majesties the King and Queen and the Army Council. An officer of the Royal Lancasters writes—"I feel so sorry to lose such good men as your son."

GRANTHAM Alfred

Private 200754, 7th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 26 August 1918. Enlisted Lincoln and resident Bassingham, Lincolnshire.Youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Grantham of Boundary Cottages, Sleaford Road, Coleby, Lincolnshire. Buried in WARLENCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Grave lost. Special Memorial 43. He is also commemorated on the Bassingham Memorial.

GRANTHAM Fred aka Frederick

Private 201472, 2nd/5th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died on service 20 September 1918. Enlisted Lincoln and resident Bassingham, Lincolnshire. Buried in VALENCIENNES (St Roch) COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Nord, France. Prisoner of War (POW) Special Memorial. He is also commemorated on the Bassingham Memorial.

Note also commemorated under Frederick Grantham (all other details identical) except buried LE QUESNOY COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Nord, France. Prisoner of War (POW) Special Memorial.

JACKSON John Thomas

Private 39303, 2nd/7th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Died of wounds 29 March 1918. Born Martin and enlisted Lincoln, Lincolnshire. Buried in ST SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France. Section P. Plot VII. Row 6. Grave 12A.

PARKER William

Private 111214, 20th Company, Labour Corps formerly 27379, 12th Labour Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, formerly 25256 Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 22 March 1918. Born Kirkby Green, Lincolnshire, enlisted Pontefract, Yorks and resident Nocton, Lincolnshire. Buried in NINE ELMS BRITISH CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot X. Row D. Grave 20.

Extract from Sleaford Gazette - Saturday 6 April 1918, page 4:

THE GREAT SACRIFICE.—Two more Digby have laid down their lives in France. Private William Parker (28), South Staffs. Labour Company, had made his home for 10 years with Mr. T. Hanson, of Digby. He was employed by Messrs. P. F. Brown and E. P. Bell. His last leave was spent in Digby just before Xmas. Letters from Sapper J. A. Reeste and Nurse Douglas state that "He died in hospital from a wound received in the head from a piece of bomb. He was admitted on 19th March, with a badly fractured skull and did not regain consciousness at all. He was operated on, but was hopeless from the first. He was made warm and comfortable and be suffered no pain. He will have decent Christian burial in the pretty little cemetery near, with military honours among his comrades."

ROLLINS John Henry

Private 43333, 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, formerly 15922 Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action at the Schwaben Redoubt 28 September 1916. Born in the parish of Holdingham Fields, Lincolnshire (now Holdingham) in 1877. Husband of Emma Rollins of 25 Victoria Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire. Born Holdingham, enlisted Lincoln and resident Coleby, Lincolnshire. Enlisted into the Lincolnshire Regiment on 18 March 1915 (regimental number 15922) later serving with the Northamptonshire Regiment (regimental number 22152) and finally with the Bedfordshire Regiment (43333). No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 2C.

WATSON Herbert

Private G/20046. 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, formerly 33908 Cavalry. Killed in action 26 October 1917. Born Riseholme, enlisted 24 April 1917 at Grantham and resident Coleby, Lincolnshire. Son of George and Charlotte (nee Shepherd) Watson, of Cioleby, Lincolnshire; he had five sisters. His attestation 24 April 1917 list him as resident Corleby, aged 26 years 236 days, a Waggoner by trade, single, height 5 feet 6½ inches, 132 lbs, chest 34-36 inches. Went to Eurpe with B.E.F. 12 October 1917 (he died 14 days into being in Europe) . No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 106 to 108.
