The memorial is situated at the southern edge of the village, east of the A161 road at the junction of Wharf Road and Trent Street, Ealand. It consist of a three-stepped base surmounted by a column, cornice and a small Latin cross with carved inscriptions in black lettering on two sides of the column. There is also a vase placed at the foot of the memorial commemorating a man from World War 2. There are 6 names for World War 1 and 1 for World War 2.

Gregory Thornton

Leading Stoker K/10086. HMS Invincible, Royal Navy. Drowned 31st May 1916, aged 25 years. Son of William and Emily Hicks of 17 Trent Terrace, Crowle Wharf, Lincs. Commemorated PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL. 16.



Able Seaman (Tyneside) Z/8608, Anson Battalion, Royal Naval Division. Died 26th October 1917. Commemorated TYNE COT MEMORIAL. Panel 2 to 3 and 162 to 162A.


John E

Memorial states L/Corporal. 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died 13th April 1917 the only close entry is John CLARK, Lance Corporal 16058, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 14 April 1917. Born and resident Doncaster, enlisted Epwworth, Lincolnshire. Buried in COJEUL BRITISH CEMETERY, ST. MARTIN-SUR-COJEUL, Pas de Calais, France. Plot/Row/Section A. Grave 30.



Private 40086. 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 2nd December 1917, aged 29 years. Son of Jonathan and Annie Holmes of 1 Trent Terrace, Crowle Wharf, Lincs. Born and enlisted Crowle, Lincs. Commemorated TYNE COT MEMORIAL. Panel 35 to 37 and 162 to 162A.


Herbert William

Driver 179795. Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 13th September 1917, aged 24 years. Son of Herbert William and Esther Eugene Teanby of Ealand, Lincs. Enlisted Crowle and resident Crowle, Lincs. Commemorated ZUYDCOOTE MILITARY CEMETERY. I.B.13.


[Sidney] George

Gunner 277547, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died of wounds 7th April 1920. Born 1894, buried 9 April 1920 in Crowle Cemetery, Lincolnshire. Aged 26. In the 1901 census he was aged 7, son of Edward E and Mary Wainwright, born Lincolnshire, resident Ealand Bonny Hale Road, Ealand, Crowle, Lincolnshire.

Their name liveth for evermore.

Also killed in the World War 1939 1945.



Private 14547655. 4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died 20th November 1944, aged 20 years. Son of James William and Kate Hebden of Ealand, Lincs. Commemorated VENRAY WAR CEMETERY. VIII.C.7.
