HUNDLEBY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial can be found at the church entrance of St Marys Church, Church Lane, Hundleby. It trakes the form of a Calvary cross under a canopy and set on a tapering shaft. The whole is set on a square plinth and base with inscriptions on faces 1 and 2 of the plinth, the 1939-1945 names on face 2 are on a separate tablet affixed to the lower face of the plinth. The memorial was unveiled and dedicated 3 April 1921. There are 5 names for World War 1 and 2 names for World War 2.

COTTINGHAM Herbert
Able Seaman 210795, (RFR/CH/B/6015). H.M.S. Aboukir, Royal Navy. Drowned 22 September 1914, age 31, when his cruiser was torpedoed off Dutch coast and sank. Born 14.11.1882 Dunholme, Lincs, son of Robert James Cottingham of Spilsby, Lincs; husband of Mrs Mabel Agnes Jarvis (formerly Cottingham, née Brash), of Camberwell London, father of Robert Arthur Cottingham. Enlisted 1900. Commemorated on Chatham Naval Memorial 2.
DAVIS Horace John
Second Lieutenant, 15 Sqdn Royal Flying Corps (Secondary Unit, 3rd Bn Lincolnshire Regiment). Killed in action 6 February 1917 age 23, when flying as observer in a BE2e. Born 5/5/1894, bpt 12/7/1894, Devonport, son of Edward & Mary Ellen Davis of Gillingham, Kent. Husband of Beatrice Mary (née Pruen) Davis (marriage 1916 Hundleby). Enlisted York, pre-war occupation bank clerk. Buried in Grave I.D.55, Varennes Military Cemetery, France.
GIBSON Charles Hugh Langford
Serjeant 6090, 1st Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 4 October 1917, Belgium, age 33. Born 1884 St Peter's, Lincoln, son of Charles & Hannah Ada (née Taylor) Gibson of Mill Lane, Lincoln; husband of Mrs. Mabel (née Would) Gibson, of 36 Grantham St, Lincoln, father of Charles Richard, Edna May & Florence Mabel Louvain Gibson. Pre-war occupation machine fitter. Commemorated on Panel 35 to 37, Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
HOLDERNESS Harry
Private 45375, 4th Bn. North Staffordshire Regiment. Killed in action 2 December 1917, France, age 24. Born ~1894 Hundleby, son of Samuel and Lucy Jane (née Jeffery) Holderness, of Brewery Cottage, Hundleby; husband of Marjorie Cox (formerly Holderness, née Brotherton), of 4, Second Avenue, Pennygate, Spalding, Lincs. Commemorated on Panel 124 to 125, Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
HUTSON HARRISON George
Serjeant 36226, 7th Bn. Leicestershire Regiment, formerly 49880, Sherwood Foresters. Killed in action 21 August 1918, age 31. Born 1885, Hundleby, adopted son of George & Louisa Hutson. Husband of Ethel (née Birch) Harrison of 21,Richard St, Newtown, Retford, Notts. Pre-war occupation grocer's assistant. Commemorated on Panel 5, Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.

HILL Charles Ernest
Squadron Leader 81048 (Service No. 562158), 106 Sqdn, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Pilot of Lancaster, killed 15 October 1942, age 31, when it crashed at Menden during bombing raid on Cologne. Born 1912, Nocton, Lincs, son of Ernest and Nettie (Zwanette Hinderike née Kromminga) Hill of Hundleby. Apprentice at RAF Halton 1928. Promoted to Flight Sergeant 1931. Commissioned as Pilot Officer 1940, Flying Officer 1941. Awards Distinguished Flying Cross January 1941, Mentioned in Despatches January 1943. Buried in Grave 17.A.12, Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany.
PARISH William Thomas
Petty Officer P/JX 133148, H.M.S. Grimsby, Royal Navy. Killed in action 25 May 1941, age 28, when his sloop was sunk by dive bombers off Tobruk. Born 12/10/1912, Spilsby, son of George William and Elizabeth (née Congreve) Parish; husband of Joan Amy Elizabeth (née Morey) Parish. Commemorated on Panel 46, Column 2, Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
