ROWSTON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The village war memorial for Rowston is to be found within St Cement's Church, Rowston. It takes the form of a brass plaque with incised black lettering, set on a wooden surround with shelf below, on the south wall of the nave. It lists two World War 1 casualties only including their dates of death and age.

Franklin

Edward Edgar

Private 34404, 1st/5th Bn. Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action 28 September 1917, aged 32. No known grave. Commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 72 to 75. According to SDGW, born Wisbech, Cambs, but BMD Register has birth of Edgar Edward Franklin 1885Q1, Sleaford 7a, 468,. Medal Rolls WO372/7 give previous service as Private RX/4/126449, Army Service Corps. 1891 Census shows he was son of John & Sarah Franklin, living in Rowston. In 1901 Census he was a waggoner at a farm called America House in Scopwick. In 1911 Census, he was a carter working for building contractor, single, a boarder in Widmerpool, Notts. All these censuses give his birthplace as Ruskington, Lincs. His birth was registered 1885Q1 in Sleaford.

DANIEL

George Herbert

[Both CWGC & SDGW list his surname as DANIELS] Private G/15401, 12th Bn. Royal Sussex Regiment. Killed in action 9 Janury 1918, aged 30. Buried in Plot XXVII. Row C. Grave 13, New Irish Farm Cemetery. According to SDGW, born March, Cambs, enlisted Sleaford, Lincs. BMD Register has birth of George Herbert Daniel 1887Q4 N. Witchford, Cambs 3b, 556. 1891 Census shows him as son of John & Fanny Daniels living at Honey Farm, Manea Road, Wimblington, Cambs. 1901 Census shows the family (surname Daniel) living at Rowston Lane, Rowston. In 1911 Census he is still with parents (surname Daniels) at same address, single, a farm labourer. All three censuses give his birthplace (with various spellings) as Wimblington, Cambs.
