In the 1911 census he was aged 29, born Frodingham, Lincolnshire, a Steelworker, son of Elizabeth Thomas (a widow), resident 40 Trent Street, Frodingham, Lincolnshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 26, born Ashby, Lincolnshire, a Grocer's Assistant, son of William and Emma Todd, resident 111, High Street, Ashby, Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. He was married in Newington, St John the Baptist, Yorkshire (East Riding) on 22 February 1914 to Lilian Maud Dimberline at which time he was a Grocer's Assistant, resident Ashby.
