NEWTOWN
AND LLANLLWCAIARN WAR MEMORIAL
Newtown
is the largest town in the county of Powys, Mid Wales, and lies on the
River Severn formed by Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn, lying within the
historic boundaries of Montgomeryshire. The Newtown memorial is located
in a small memorial green enclosure, Memorial Green, at the junction
of A483 (New Road) and Shortbridge Street, Newtown, Montgomeryshire.
It takes the form of a plain cenotaph on a three stepped base set in
small memorial garden. A Sword of Sacrifice is positioned on the front
face and inscriptions engraved on all faces. The memorial lists those
who died in World War 1 and there are 174 names. The site cost £500
and was unveiled circa 20 January 1925 by the Lord Lieutenant of Montgomeryshire.
