ANTINGHAM WAR MEMORIAL

Antingham is a village north of North Walsham. The memorial is located in the churchyard, St Mary's Church, Church Lane, Antingham, North Norfolk. It takes the form of a rough-hewn, wheeled, Celtic cross standing on a rough-hewn tapering plinth. The inscription appears on the fronst face of the plinth with an additional Second World War commemoration on grey granite tablet laid at foot of cross; all inscription are in black lettering. There are four names for World War 1 and two names for World War 2.

Rifleman 52034. Rifle Brigade. Formerly 13573 Norfolk Regiment. Died of wounds Friday 26 July 1918. Age 24. Born and lived Antingham. Enlisted Norwich. Son of Mrs. H. Whitwood, of The Hill, Antingham, North Walsham, Norfolk. Buried: DELVILLE WOOD CEMETERY, LONGUEVAL, Somme, France. Ref. XXVII. R. 4.

Marine PO/X 2274, No. 40 Royam Marine Commando, Royal Marines. Died 19 August 1942. Aged 23. Son of William Edward Gotts, and of Gertrude Gotts, of Suffield, Norfolk previously from Antingham. Buried in DIEPPE CANADIAN WAR CEMETERY, HAUTOT-SUR-MER, Seine-Maritime, France. Plot/Row/Section A. Grave 30.

Private 5775033. 5th Battalion,, Royal Norfolk Regiment. Died Saturday 14 April 1945. Age 25. Buried: KRANJI WAR CEMETERY, Singapore. Ref. 26. C. 18.
