Brooke War Memorial, which is situated at the west end of the churchyard
of the Church of St Peter, is a Grade II listed building. It lists 17
men from Worlkd War 1 and 5 for World War 2. It takes the form of a
stone, floriated, cross on a tall octagonal shaft with moulded collar,
set onto a square-section, corniced, plinth bearing the inscriptions.
The whole is set upon a moulded square-section base. There is also a
brass plaque within the church commemorating one man.

290547 5th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 13th April
1918. Son of Robert John and Lucy Bullen of Brooke, Norfolk (as
1911). Husband of Gertrude R Bullen (nee Adams). Born 14th October
1880 (as baptism record, although birth registered 1879) Brooke,
enlisted Cromer and resident Blakeney, Norfolk. Commemorated Ploegsteert

wounds 13th July 1916, aged 24 years. Son of (the late) James and

Norwich and resident Brooke, Norfolk. Commemorated Essex Farm Cemetery.
John Cubitt. Private 200607. 4th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Died
Egypt 5th December 1917, aged 23 years. Son of James and Hannah
Cubitt of Welbeck, Brooke, Norfolk as 1911). Born 26th September
1894 Thorpe Hamlet and enlisted Norwich, Norfolk. CWGC has noted
‘Native of Brooke, Norfolk’. Commemorated Port Said War Memorial
Dredge. Private 20461. 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment, formerly 16508
Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action Gallipoli 6th August 1915. Son

Jay. Leading Seaman 202532, Royal Navy. HMS ‘Hawke’ (Cruiser, sunk
by German submarine U-9). Died 15th October 1914 years. Son of Christopher
and Louisa Jay of Norwich, Norfolk. Husband of Ethel Alice Jay (nee
Stone) of Brooke, Norfolk. Born 23rd April 1883 Norwich, Norfolk
(as naval record although birth registered 1884) and enlisted 7th

of White Lion, Brooke, Norfolk (as 1911) and Betsy A E Parfitt (nee
Smith, from 1916). Born 1878 Brooke (as SDGW, born Shotesham on

Peter Barnard CORBETT, Sergeant (Obsever) 910665, 90 Squadron, Royal
Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 8 September 1941. In the 1939
Register he was born 13 March 1917, a Student recommended by selection
board and waiting admission working as General Labourer, son of
Percy B and Gwladys Corbett, resident The Croft, Loddon R.D., Norfolk.
Buried in Bygland Churchyard, Norway. Collective grave.
