GAYTON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information
Compiled and Copyright © David Griffin 2018
researched Martin Edwards

The Gayton war memorial takes the form of a lych gate at the entrance to St Nicholas Church, Lynn Road, Gayton. The lych gate memorial has a carved oak facia surmounted by crossses front and back with the names of the fallen carved and painted on a shield in the centre eaves. There are 20 names for World War 1 and 3 for World War 2. Within the church is a further brass plaque listing the Loyal Albert Victor Lodge, Manchester Unity Independant Order of Oddfellows (M.U.I.O.O.F.) who fell in World War 1. There are six names listed. The MUIOOF is quite different from the Masonic Lodges in that it is a "benefit lodge". It has more of a social structure than Masonic, founded in Manchester during the days before Government Social Welfare assistance. Members contributed for common benefits of health and welfare. It has both male and female membership. All names on both memorials have been sorted into alphabetical order within conflict for ease fo reading and research.
