HONING WAR MEMORIAL

Honing is situated a few miles south east of North Walsham. The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is situated on raised ground north of the village. There are two memorials, a stone Cross in the churchyard and a Roll of Honour inside the Church.

  BECK Donald George

Private 29712. 7th Battalion,, Norfolk Regiment. Died of wounds Saturday 22 September 1917. Age 21. Born Honing. Enlisted Norwich. Son of George and Florence C. Beck, of Honing, Norwich, Norfolk. Buried: DUISANS BRITISH CEMETERY, ETRUN, Pas de Calais, France. Ref. V. B. 16.

  CUBITT Edward Randall

aptain. 5th Battalion,, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action Thursday 12 August 1915. Age 30. Son of Mr. E. G. Cubitt, J.P., and Christabel M. Cubitt, of Honing Hall, Worstead, Norwich; husband of Janet Catherine Cubitt, of "Butlers, Hatfield Peverel, Essex. Commemorated: HELLES MEMORIAL, Turkey. Panel 42 to 44.

  CUBITT Victor Murray

Lieutenant. 5th Battalion,, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action Thursday 12 August 1915. Age 27. Second son of Mr. E.G. Cubitt, J.P., and Christabel M. Cubitt, of Honing Hall, Worstead, Norwich. Born 15th October 1887, educated at Lowestoft and Repton. By profession was a Land Agent and for some years was Secretary of the Scottish Branch of the Land Agents’ Society; he acted for several considerable Scottish Estates. Prior to the outbreak of the War, he was agent for Captain Murray Dunlop of Corsock House and his name is recorded both on the Corsock Village War Memorial and at St Ninian’s, Castle Douglas as well as on Honing Memorial.   CUBITT Eustace Henry

Captain. Adjt. 1st/5th Battalion,, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action Thursday 19 April 1917. Age 28. Son of Edward George and Christabel M. Cubitt, of Honing Hall, Worstead, Norwich. Buried: GAZA WAR CEMETERY, Israel. Ref. XXIII. C. 10.

  FLAXMAN Archibald Charles

Private 19294. 2nd Battalion,, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action Monday 6 March 1916. Born Honing. Enlisted Norwich. Commemorated: BASRA MEMORIAL, Iraq. Panel 10.

  JARVIS Robert

Either: Serjeant 201463. 1st/4th Battalion,, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action Friday 2 November 1917. Born and enlisted Norwich. Commemorated: JERUSALEM MEMORIAL, Israel. Panels 12 to 15.   HANNANT William Kelter

Private G/15283. 16th (Sussex Yeomanry) Battalion,, Royal Sussex Regiment. Killed in action Saturday 21 September 1918. Age 25. Enlisted East Dereham. Son of William and Blanche Emma Hannant, of Honing, Worstead, Norwich. Commemorated: VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 6.

  MEEK John Robert

The memorial indicates John Robert Meek was in the Bedfordshire Regiment. However, this is probably the same man from the Northants Regiment (below). No one by this name is recorded as being in the Bedfordshire Regiment on the CD.

* FLAXMAN Herbert Sy(i)dney

Private 35859. 10th Battalion,, Cheshire Regiment. (Memorial gives Regiment at Bedfordshire). Killed in action Monday 9 October 1916. Age 31. Born Honing. Lived Rostherne, Cheshire. Enlisted Knutsford. Son of Ben Flaxman, of Honing, Worstead, Norwich. Buried: REGINA TRENCH CEMETERY, GRANDCOURT, Somme, France. Ref. IX. E. 5.

  THIRTLE Sidney John

Private 38559, The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment) then Private 67635, Labour Corps. Died in Honing 20th June 1923. Aged 26. Buried in SS. Peter and Paul Churchyard, Honing. [Note: He probably died from wounds or illness from World War 1 hence his inclusion on the memorial - he does not appear to have been discharged as unfit).

Private 17681. 1st Battalion,, Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action Saturday 25 September 1915. Born Honing. Enlisted Norwich. Commemorated: LOOS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 91 to 93.
