LITTLE ELLINGHAM WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information

The Little Ellignham war memorial stands in the churchyard of the parish church. It takes the form of a granite, stone wheel cross mounted on a three stepped plinth. The inscription and names being on the three levels of the plinth. There are 12 names for World War 1 and three for World War 2 which have yet to be transcribed.

CLARKE

George Albert

Lance Corporal 15705 George Albert Clarke was born in Wicklewood on 6th July 1893. He enlisted in the 7th Norfolk Regiment in Reepham on 11/09/1914. He served in France & Flanders and died of wounds at Hulloch, France on 28th March 1916 aged 22. He is buried at Sailly-Labourse Communal Cemetery Grave O.7 and is remembered on the Little Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of Albert T. and Alice Clarke, of Anchor Farm, Little Ellingham.

CREASY

Herbert Glanville

Sergeant 5266 Herbert Glanville Creasy was born in Aldeburgh or Great Yarmouth 13th February 1883. He enlisted in the 2nd Honourable Artillery Company at Armoury House on 1st November 1915. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action at Paschendaele on 29th October 1917 according to CWGC and SDGW but 27th October 1917 on plaque within church, aged 36. He is buried at Voormezeele Enclosures No.1 And No.2 Grave I. L. 39 and is remembered on the Little Ellingham War Memorial. He was the husband of Violet Kate Creasy, of 22, Pembury Road, Tottenham, London a resident of Tottenham.

EDWARDS

John

Private 20553 John Edwards was born in Brandon. He originally enlisted as 17711 in the Norfolk Regiment in Norwich then later transferred to the 1st Essex Regiment. He was drowned on Royal Edward on 13th August 1915 en route for Gallipoli. He is remembered on the Helles Memorial Panel 144 to 150 or 229 to 233 and on the Little Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of Mr. Ambrose Edwards; husband of Julia Daniels (formerly Edwards), of Goose Common, Little Ellingham and a resident of Little Ellingham.

FOX

John

John Fox was born in Little Ellingham c1888. He is remembered on the Little Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of George and Louisa Fox. No further information is currently available.

LINCOLN

Albert William

Private 8415 Albert William Lincoln was born in Attleborough. He enlisted in the 2nd Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in Mesopotamia and died on 31st July 1916 aged ~22. He is remembered on the Basra Memorial Panel 10 and on the Little Ellingham War Memorial.

MATTHEWS

Robert

Private 14166 Robert Matthews was born in Great Cressingham c1895. He enlisted in the 8th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action at Carnoy on 1st July 1916 aged ~21. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 1C and 1D and on the Little Ellingham War Memorial.

SHERMAN

Charles David

Corporal 10271 Charles David Sherman was born in Attleborough c1890. He enlisted in the 2nd East Lancashire Regiment in Bacup Lancashire. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 23rd January 1915 aged 25. He is remembered on the Le Touret Memorial Panel 18 and on the Little Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of T. F. Sherman, of Crown Lane, Little Ellingham and a resident of Attleborough.

SKITMORE

George William

Private 63175 George William Skitmore was born in c1891 and originally enlisted as 4592 in the 3rd City of London Regiment in Farringdon St London then later transferred to the 10th Royal Fusiliers. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 14th November 1916 aged 25. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 8 C 9 A and 16 A. and on the Little Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of Isaac and Martha Ann Skitmore, of Little Ellingham and a resident of West London.

SKITMORE

Walter Charles

Private 34046 Walter Charles Skitmore was born in Little Ellingham c1894. He originally enlisted as 202667 in the East Kent Regiment in Attleborough then later transferred to the 1st/7th Royal Warwickshire. He served in France & Flanders and died on 8th March 1918 aged 24. He is buried at Giavera British Cemetery, Arcade Plot 5. Row E. Grave 4 and is remembered on the Little Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of Ellis and Charlotte Skitmore, of Barrack Row, Little Ellingham.

TAYLOR

Walter William

Private 59047 Walter William Taylor was born in Little Ellingham c1895. He originally enlisted as 26842 in the Yorkshire Regiment in Flaxton Yorkshire then later transferred to the 9th Northumberland Fusiliers. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 24th October 1918 aged ~23. He is buried at Bermerain Communal Cemetery Grave A.3 and is remembered on the Little Ellingham War Memorial.

TYE

Horace

Corporal 41296 Horace Tye was born in Horning c1888. He originally enlisted as 5991 in the Norfolk Regiment in Attleborough then later transferred to the 13th Essex Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 28th April 1917 aged ~29. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial Bay 7 and on both the Little Ellingham and Caston War Memorials. He was a resident of Little Ellingham.

WRIGHT

Arthur J

Private 22365 Arthur J. Wright was born in Polstead Suffolk. He enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 8th October 1918 aged 36. He is buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Grave Gouy V. B. 3 and is remembered on the Little Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of Arthur J. and Annie Ellen Wright, of Anchor Corner, Little Ellingham.
