Middleton is a village, 3 miles from King’s Lynn. The village
is divided by the A47. The. The War Memorial is situated to the front
of the Church of St Mary. The four-sided stone pillar memorial has an
urn on top and a wrought iron surround. It commemorates those lost in
both World Wars.

Fanny Barrett, resident 28, Fair Green, Middleton, Freebridge Lynn,
Norfolk In the 1911 census he was aged 18, born Gaywood, Norfolk,
a Farm Labourer, son of Fanny Barrett (a widowe0, resident West
Winch, Norfolk. Enlisted 8 May 1915 in Norwich, aged 22 years 6
months, a Gardener, single, resident Fair View, Middleton, King's
Lynn, Norfolk, height 5 feet 3 inches, chest 32½-34½
inches. Suffered shrapnel wounds to his left ankle 13 October 1915.
Discharged 20 May 1916 at Gillinghham, Kent, being No Longer Physically
Fit for War Service (Sickness) para

he was aged 23 years 6 months, height 5 feet 3 inches, chest 32½-34½

16 MONTHS.
A
memorial service in honour of Pte. W. Chapman, 1st Norfolks, was
held on Sunday in Middleton church. Pte. Chapman was at the battle
of Mons, when he was reported missing, but notification has since
been received by his parents (who reside at Tower End, Middleton)
that he was killed. Pte. Chapnian has three brothers still nerving
with the colours, one in France,) one at the Persian Gulf and
one a sergeant in the Norfolk Regiment on home duty.

MIDDLETON
MEMORIAL SERVICE.
On
Sunday evening a memorial service was held in the Middleton parish
church (conducted by Rev. J. B. Alexander) in honour of Pte. J.
W. Wilgris [sic],
18576 [sic],
Northamptonshire Regiment, who, according to report received by
his parents from the War Office, died of wounds while on active
service in France. The deceased soldier enlisted on May 10, 1915,
and was drafted to France on November 25, where he had a varied
experience of the fighting line, being in several engagements
and also acting as stretcher bearer attached to the Royal Engineers
and the R.A.M.C. He was employed by Mr. Rennie, of West Bilney
Lodge, previous to enlistment as a woodmen and estate hand and
was much respected by all who knew him. He was 33 years of age
and has two brothers in the Army. The chief mourners at Sunday's
service were Mr. and Mrs. W Wilgris [sic]
(father and mother). James. Robert and Ed. Walvis (brother. Mimes
P. and E. Wilgris [sic]
(sisters), Mrs. B. Cawston (sister), Mr. and Mrs. H. Atkin, Mr.
and Mrs. T. Mullinger, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Atkins, Mr. and Mrs.
J. Howard, Mr. R. Atkins (uncle), and Mr. and Mrs. R. Coe. The
"Royal Standard" Ledge of Shepherds, of which deceased
was an enthusiastic member, was represented by about 25 members
in draped regalia. The pulpit was covered with the Union Jack.
Special prayers and hymns were rendered, and the sermon was taken
from Hebrews v. 7-8. At the close the "Dead March" was
played by Miss Wright (West Winch), who was assisted during the
service by Mrs. R. M. Roofe.
