RIDLINGTON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information

The Ridlington war memorials are to be found in St Peter's Church, Happisburgh Road, Ridlington, North Norfolk, Norfolk. The World War 1 memorial takes the form of a rectangular white, stone, tablet that is wall mounted and supported by two corbels. The tablet is surmounted by a cornice with pediment within which is a gold latin cross. The inscription is in black block capitals. There are five names listed. The World War 2 memorial is also located within the church and takes the form of a small, wall mounted, painted statue of Saint Peter with a small brass dedicatory plaque placed below. Captain, 5th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 12 August 1915. Son of Edward George Cubitt, J.P. and Cristobel M Cubitt (nee Burroughes) of Honing Hall, Norfolk. Husband of Janet Catherine Cubitt (nee Pelly) of ‘Butlers’, Hatfield Peverel, Essex. Born 1884 in Paddington, London and resident Church Farm, Ridlington, Norfolk (as probate). No known grave. Commemorated on Helles Memorial, Turkey (including Gallipoli). Panel 42 to 44.
FURNESS William George
Private 79223, 9th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers formerly TR/LON/136526, Traqining Reserve, 53rd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Killed in action 21 September 1918. Aged 18. Born 1900 in Ridlington, Norfolk, resident North Walsham, Norfolk, enlisted Norwich. Son of James and Edith Furness (nee Robinson) of Hall Cottages, Smallburgh, Norfolk. Buried Epehy Wood Farm Cemetery, Somme, France. Plot V. Row D. Grave 6.
GOTTS George

Private 3/7088, 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Died on service 27 February 1917. Son of John and Alice Julia Gotts (nee Neal) of Mill Common, Ridlington, Norfolk. Born 1892 Ridlington and enlisted North Walsham, Norfolk. No known grave. Commemorated on Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 30 and 31.

Note: property to Hilda Shreeve (relationship unexplained).

HEDGE Bertie John

Company Sergeant Major 7957, 2nd Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Killed in action 9 September 1916. Parentage unproven. Born 1889 Ridlington and enlisted North Walsham, Norfolk. No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier and Face 13A and 13B.

WATTS Ernest William
PW/6137. 1st Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, formerly 9155 Royal West Surrey Regiment. Killed in action 2nd November 1916. Son of James and Elizabeth Watts (nee Hurn) of The Street, Ridlington, Norfolk. Born 1881 East Ruston, enlisted Norwich and resident North Walsham, Norfolk. No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier and Face 12D and 13B.

BARKER Herbert Thomas
Ordinary Seaman C/JX351185, Royal Navy. HMS Hecla (Destroyer Tender Ship, torpedoed by German submarine U-515). Killed in action 12th November 1942. Son of George and Lily May Barker (nee Lines) of Happisburgh, Norfolk. Born 1923. No known grave. Commemorated on Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent. Panel 57, Column 1.
