STIFFKEY - WAR MEMORIAL

To the right of the entrance, inside the Church of St. John The Baptist in Stiffkey is a memorial that consists of a marble plaque inscribed with various company Badges inset with names. The World War 1 dead are represented on the plaque, with date of death, and also there is a further Roll of Honour, handwritten and painted on silk which can be found to the right of the bell tower which contains all but one of the men on the plaque. There is a further roll of men who served in World War 1. There is also a village memorial next to doctors' surgery on A149 containing the same name as the church. For World War 2 there is a Roll of Honour for the men who died, with the service their were in and the month and year in which they died, plus a further roll of those who served.

Private 41612, 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 14 April 1917. Aged 29. Born and resident Stiffkey, enlisted Holt. Son of Mary Ann Curson, of Chapel Cottage, Stiffkey. Formerly 5668, Norfolk Regiment. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 7.

Sidney [James]

Private 56866, 11th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Killed in action 20 April 1916. Born Stiffkey, enlisted Wells. Son of Jabez and Mary Ann Hust; husband of Ethel Maria Hust. Formerly 202979, Norfolk Regiment. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 54 to 60 and 163A.

Private 29034, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Died of wounds 1 August 1917. Aged 22. Born and resident Stiffkey, enlisted Norwich. Son of Thomas and Rose Reynolds, of Morston Rd., Stiffkey. Buried in BRANDHOEK NEW MILITARY CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot II. Row F. Grave 3.
