DAVENTRY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Gerald Thompson 2008
also Andy Nixon and Patricia Lawton

The memorial is situated at the eastern end of Daventry Holy Cross Churchyard on Abbey Street near the corner with Vicar Lane. Made from Northamptonshire stone the Cross of Sacrifice is of a similar design to that by the architect Reginald Blomfield. It is a simple cross, embossed with a sword and is mounted on an octagonal base. At the base of the cross there is a bronze plaque with the dedication. The unveiling and dedication took place on Sunday 9th April 1922. There are three tablets on the memorial base engraved with the names of the 145 men who lost their lives in World War 1 giving their Rank, Initials and Name. There are 114 names listed for World War 1 and 31 for World War 2; there are 3 additional names for those who are buried in the cemetery but not on the memorial for World War 1 and 2 additional names for those who are buried in the cemetery but not on the memorial for World War 2. The names are arranged in alphabetical order but ‘O’ is in between ‘D’ and ‘E’. A fourth tablet has been added to commemorate the fallen of World War 2 this gives only Initials and Name. In some cases the initials are reversed. There is no mention of casualties from other conflicts. Daventry Town Council now has the honour of maintaining the War Memorial and organising the Remembrance Sunday Parade on behalf of the Royal British Legion.
