Extract
from local paper:
IN MEMORIAM.
In
loving memory of Pte. FRANK SMITH, Northants Regt., of 39, Barnwell-street,
Kettering, killed in action, June 7th, 1917, aged 22 years.
We often sit and think of him,
His name we often recall;
There is nothing left to answer
But his photo on the wall.
He sleeps beside his comrades,
In a hallowed grave unknown,
But his name is written id letters of love
On our hearts he left at home.
-From his loving Aunt, Uncle, and sister Rose.
KETTERING
SOLDIER KILLED WHILST " WIRING."
Mr. and Mrs. Cobley, of 39, Barnwell-street. Kettering, have received
sad news to the effect that their nephew and adopted son, Pte.
Frank Smith-Cobley, of the Northants Regiment, was killed, on
June 8th, whilst wiring in front of the trench. "I have not
been with the company very long," says the captain in the
course of a sympathetic letter to Mr. and Mrs. Cobley, "but
I knew your nephew very well. He was always such a cheery and
willing worker that one could not help noticing him. He will be
missed very much by all of us." Corpl., J. Coe writes to
say: "It will be some consolation for you to know that he
suffered no pain, as he was shot under the heart with an explosive
bullet, and died immediately. We buried him behind our lines.
In losing Frank I have lost my best chum, and I miss him as much
as if he was my brother."
The deceased soldier enlisted in August, 1915, went to France
in the following April, was wounded in July, 1916, and shortly,
afterwards admitted into Newcastle Armstrong Cottage Hospital.
After six months in England he was again sent to France, in January
of the present year. Prior to joining the Army he worked at Messrs.
Coe Bros,' boot factory in Meeting-lane. Hewas 22 years of age.
