Private 260002, 2nd/5th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Killed in action in Egypt 10th April 1918. Age 33. Born Rothefield Greys, enlisted Oxford, resident Henley-on-Thames. Husband of Alice Sarah Allen, of 5, West St., Henley-on-Thames. Buried in RAMLEH WAR CEMETERY, Israel. Row T Grave 66.



Private 20635, 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action in France & Flanders 3rd July 1916. Enlisted Reading. Buried in OVILLERS MILITARY CEMETERY, Somme, France. Plot VII Row B Grave 2.


Herbert George

[Spelt SHURVILLE on CWGC & SDGW] Sapper 42792, 'Z' Special Company, Royal Engineers. Killed in action 6th May 1917 in France & Flanders. Age 29. Born Henley-on-Thames, enlisted Winchester, Hampshire. Son of George and Sarah Shurville, of Rotherfield, Greys, Henley-on-Thames; husband of Evelyn May Shurville, of 2, Coombe End Cottages, Warren Rd., Kingston-on-Thames. Commemorated in in BEAULENCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY, LIGNY-THILLOY, Pas de Calais, France. Special Memorial A. 2.


Francis Tower aka Frank

Lance Corproal 3033, 1st/4th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Killed in action 14th August 1916 in France & Flanders. Age 21. Enlisted Oxford, resident Henley-on-Thames. Son of John H. and Eliza Weston, of Hermes Farm, Henley-on-Thames. Commemorated on THIEPVAl MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 10 A and 10 D


Joseph Edmund

[Listed as 2nd Battalion on memorial] Private 7477, 5th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Killed in action 25th September 1915 in France & Flanders. Born henley-on-Thames, enlisted Reading, resident Andover, Hampshire. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 37 and 39.

Sergeant (Flight Engineer U/T) 574300, 7 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died 13th July 1942. Age 19. Son of William Gilbert George and Nora Janetta Atkins, of Henley-on Thames. Buried in ROTHERFIELD GREYS CHURCHYARD, Rotherfield Greys, Oxfordshire.


Herbert Blake

[Splet Hubert Blake HODSON on CWGC] Lieutenant 134985, 9th Battalion, Queen's Royal Lancers attached 1st Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. Died 28th January 1942. Age 22. Son of the Rt. Hon. Sir Charles Hodson, M.C., and Lady Hodson, of Henley-on-Thames. Buried in BENGHAZI WAR CEMETERY, Libya. Plot 2. Row C. grave 21.


Rodney Warner Bartholomew

Lieutenant 256102, Rifle Brigade. Killed in action in Germany 22nd February 1945. Age 22. Son of The Revd. Robert Howard Lloyd, M.A., and Patricia Margaret Evelyn Lloyd, of Henley-on-Thames. a Scholar of Christ Church, spending a year at Oxford University (1941-1942), but this being war time, he came down after a year, the plan being to complete his degree course after the end of hostilities. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). Buried in REICHSWALD FOREST WAR CEMETERY, Kleve, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Plot 51 Row J Grave 1.
