The memorial to David Stirling and the SAS members who fell in World War 2 can be found just oustide Doune, at the roadside on the the B824 to the South East of Doune, Stirling. The memorial consists of a cirular paved enclosure built in the form of a stone wall with one entrance/exit. The centre of the circle contains four rocks upon one of these stands the scuplted figure of Colonel Sir David Stirling founder of the SAS. He is in uniform with an officers coat and cap. The figure faces north and carries binoculars with leather strap in outstretched left hand. There are three plaques mounted on stones beneath the figure, one plaque with his name in raised lettering surrounded by raised border; another plaque with the SAS dedication in raised lettering flanked by an emblem in relief and surrounded by a raised border and one other plaque with SAS regimental history with a single lined border and regimental emblem depicted in upper centre. There are the names of 317 members of the SAS who were killed in World War II listed on 32 plaques on the ground around the statue as well as two plaques with the SAS badge and six blank plaques. Also listed is David Stirling who served and returned.

Lieutenant Colonel Sir Archibald David Stirling, DSO, OBE (15 November 1915 – 4 November 1990) was a Scottish officer in the British Army, mountaineer, and the founder of the Special Air Service. He saw active service during the Second World War. Stirling was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in recognition of gallant and distinguished service in the Middle East on 24 February 1942, appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of gallant and distinguished service in the field on 14 November 1946 and appointed a Knight Bachelor in the 1990 New Year Honours for services to the military. In 2002 the SAS memorial, a statue of Stirling standing on a rock, was unveiled on the Hill of Row near his family's estate at Park of Keir.

By the end of the Second World War on 8 May 1945, the SAS had suffered 330 casualties, but had killed or wounded 7,733 and captured 23,000 of their enemies. A list of known SAS operations is available on a separate page.

Extract from The London Gazette 4 September 1945:

"In Italy, on the night of 8th/9th April, 1945, Major Lassen was ordered to take out a patrol and raid the north shore of Lake Comacchio. His task was to cause casualties, capture prisoners and give the impression of a major landing. The patrol was challenged and came under machine-gun fire. Major Lassen himself attacked with grenades and silenced two enemy posts, capturing two prisoners and killing several Germans. The patrol had suffered casualties and was still under fire. Major Lassen moved forward and flung more grenades into a third enemy position, calling upon the enemy to surrender. He was then hit and mortally wounded, but whilst falling he flung a grenade, wounding more of the enemy and enabling his patrol to capture this last position. Finally, he refused to be evacuated lest he should impede the withdrawal and endanger further lives. His high sense of devotion to duty and the esteem in which he was held by the men he led, added to his own magnificent courage, enabled Major Lassen to carry out with complete success all the tasks he had been given."
