HAMBLETON WAR MEMORIAL AND ROLL OF HONOUR

World War 1 - War Memorial and Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is located in St Andrew’s Churchyard, Ketton Road/Oakham Road junction, Upper Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland. It taqkes the form of a two-stepped square base surmounted by a square sectioned tapering plinth with a rectangular sectioned tapering pillar, capital and Clipsham stone cross. There are incised inscriptions on three sides; the maker was George Draycott of Oakham and it was unveiled 27 June 1920; attended by Major General Lord Ranksborough. Within the church is a framed and glazed Roll of Honour for all those from Hambleton that served in World War 1 including those who died.

ASHWORTH, MiD Leonard Temple

Lieutenant-Colonel, Royal Field Artillery. Died in Guy's Hospital, London, on service 22 March 1918. Aged 47. Son of Frederick Charles Ashworth. Married Phyllis Mary Cooper 28 November 1899 in Hemel Hempstead, St Mary, Hertfordshire, daughter of Mr Clement A P and Mrs Astley Cooper, of Hambleton Hall, Oakham. One daughter, Mary Felcity Perpeta Ashworth, born 25 May 1912. Mentioned in Despatches (MiD). Cadet 4 February 1888, Second Lieutenant 14 February 1890, Lieutenant 14 February 1893, Captain 23 January 1900, Adjutant 1st Worcester Volunteer Artillery 15 January 1902, Major 5 April 1907, Lieutenant-Colonel October 1914. Buried 26 March 1918 in North East corner of HAMBLETON (ST. ANDREW) CHURCHYARD, Rutlandshire.

DEATH OF A RUTLAND OFFICER.

Lieutenant-Colonel Leonard Temple Ashworth. R.F.A., of Hambleton, Oakham, died on Friday at Guy's Hospital, following an operation. He was 47 years of age, and second son of the late Mr. C. F. Ashworth. He passed out of Woolwich into the Royal Field Artillery in February, 1899, and reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel in October, 1914. He was mentioned in despatches by Viscount French in October, 1914.

Private 3080, Cyclist Battalion, Army Cyclist Corps formerly 14373, Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action 27 May 1918. Aged 23. Born Hambleton, Rutland, resident Hamilton, Leicester, enlisted Kettering, Northampton. Baptised 1 December 1895 in Hambleton, Rutland. Son of George and Susan Baines, of Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland. In the 1901 census he was aged 5, born Hambleton, Rutland, son of George and Susan Baines, resident Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland & Leicestershire. In the 1911 census he was aged 15, born Hambleton, Rutland, a Domestic Garden Boy, son of George and Susan Baines, resident Upper Hambleton, Oakham, Empingham, Rutland & Leicestershire. Attested at Kettering 2 September 1914, aged 19, a Gardener by trade, single, embarked Southampton 24 April 1918, disembarked Havre, France, 25 April 1918, joined unit at Rouen 27 April 1918, posted to IX Battalion 8 May 1918. joined battalion in the field 11 May 1918, missing 27 May 1918. Served with the M.E.F. disembarked 8 November 1915 at Mudros, embarked for United Kingdom 16 March 1916. No known grave. Commemorated on SOISSONS MEMORIAL, Aisne, France.
BAINES Herbert
Private 7589, 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment formerly 6543, Leicestershire Regiment. Killed in action 13 March 1915. Born and resident Hambleton, Rutland, enlisted Stamford. Baptised 17 June 1885 in Hambleton, son of George and Jane Baines. In the 1891 census he was aged 5, born Hambleton, Rutland, a scholar, son of George and Jane Z Baines, resident Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland & Leicestershire. In the 1901 census he was aged 15, born Hambleton, Rutland, a Domestic gardener, son of George and Susan Baines, resident Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland & Leicestershire. In the 1911 census he was aged 26, born Oakham, Rutland, a serving solidrer, Private, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, billetted in Aden, Overseas Military, Ships and Overseas Establishments. No known grave. Commemorated on LE TOURET MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 8.
HIBBITT Alfred
[Listed as HIBBETT on Railway records] Private 27264, 6th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Killed in action 15 September 1916. Aged 20. Born 7 February 1896 in Hambleton, Oakham, enlisted 2 February 1916 in Sheffield. Baptised 22 March 1896 in Hambleton, Rutland, son of Alfred and Eliza Hibbitt. In the 1901 census he was aged 5, born Hambleton, Rutland, son of Alfred and Eliza Hibbitt, resident Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland & Leicestershire. In the 1911 census he was aged 15, born Hambleton, Rutalnd, a Wood dealer's boy, son Alfred and Eliza Hibbitt, resident Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland & Leicestershire. Prior to enlistment he had been employed as a railway porter. He embarked for France in July 1916 taking part in the Battle of the Somme where he was killed in action. Buried in DELVILLE WOOD CEMETERY, LONGUEVAL, Somme, France. Plot XIV. Row C. Grave 4.
HIGGINS Percy
Driver, British Red Cross Society. Died during an operation 27 January 1917 at St. Thomas' Hospital, Lambeth. Aged 20. Baptised 8 March 1896 in Exton, Rutland, son of Tom Palmer and Sara Amy Higgins. He was the son of Tom and Sarah Higgins of Barnsdale, Rutland. Prior to joining the Red Cross he was a chauffeur. After enlistment he went out to join the British Army in France in May 1915. He volunteered to work on convoys for the French army, and was attached to 'B' Section Sanataire Anglaise, No. 16 under Colonel Barry and Captain Marshall. His convoy did special work at Verdun and Duamont, and also at Perthes, Vaux, Bras and Fleury. The exposure and hardships he endured caused a growth in his throat, and he was invalided home. He was a general favourite with all the officers and men of the convoy, who sent to his parents a special memorial framed in ebony, signed by them, sixty four in all. In the 1901 census he was aged 5, born WExton, Rutland, son of Tom P and Sarah A Higgins, resident Barnsdale Hill, Exton, Oakham, Rutland & Leicestershire. Buried with Militatry Funeral 30 January 1917 in HAMBLETON (ST. ANDREW) CHURCHYARD, Rutlandshire.
PAWLETT Samuel
Private S/4899, 10th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Killed in action 6 July 1916. Born Burley On The Hill, Rutland. Resident Hambleton. Baptised 9 February 1890 in Burley, Rutland. son of David and Emma Pawley. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Pawlett, of Hambleton, Rutland. He embarked for France in November 1916, and other than being killed in action no other information appears available. His brother John Thomas Pawlett (see below) also died. In the 1901 census he was aged 11, born Rutland, son of David and Emma Pawlett, resident Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland & Leicestershire. In the 1911 census he was aged 21, born Burley on the Hill, Rutland, a Domestic Gardener, single, resident Rufford Gardens near Ollerton, Rufford, Nottinghamshire. Enlisted 2 August 1915 in Lambeth, aged 23 years 6 months, a Game Keeper by trade, height 5 feet 10½ inches, weight 132 lbs, chest 39-41½ inches.
PAWLETT John Thomas
Lance Corporal 1531, 1st/5th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Died of wounds 5 December 1917. Aged 30. Born and enlisted Oakham, Rutlandshire. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Pawlett, of Hambleton, Rutland. In the 1901 census he was aged 13, born Oakham. Rutland, a Farm labourer, son of David and Emma Pawlett, resident Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland & Leicestershire. Buried in NOEUX-LES-MINES COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Pas de Calais, France. Plot IV. Row A. Grave 20.
PRESTON Albert Edward
[Listed as Edward Albert PRESTON in some Army Service Papers] Private 15228, 8th (Service) Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Killed in action 15 July 1916. Aged 23. Born 25 February 1892 in Hambleton, Rutland, and resident Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland, enlisted Leicester. Baptised 3 April 1892 in Hambleton. Son of Josiah and Mary Caroline Preston, of Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland. He had been employed as a footman in the service of Colonel Blair of Ashwell Hall prior to his enlistment. He embarked for France on the 15 July 1915 and took part in the Battle of the Somme. He was reported wounded and missing in action on the 15 July 1916, and was presumed killed on that date. In the 1901 census he was aged 9, born Hambleton Rutland, son of Josiah and Mary Preston, resident Hambleton, Oakham, Rutland & Leicestershire. In the 1911 census he was aged 18, born Hamleton, Rutland, a Domestic Hall Boy, working at The Stables, Ashwell Hall, Ashwell, Oakham, Rutland & Leicestershire. Enlisted 5 September 1914 at Leicester, aged 22 years 192 days, single, a Footman by trade, height 5 feet 9½ inches, weight 130 lbs, chest 35½ to 38 inches, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, dark brown hair, religious denomination Church of England. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 2 C and 3 A.
