ESHANESS WAR MEMORIAL

The Eshaness war memorial is to be found inside Eshaness Old Churchyard, Shetland. It takes the form of a rough hewn, rectangular granite stone with an ornate, polished, carved face. There are four names for World War 1 and one for World War 2. Besides those on the memorial there are several other military graves in the cemetery.

Major. D Battery, 189th Brigade, RFA. Died 10th July 1917, aged 34 years. Son of Harry and Dora Chiene Cheyne of Edinburgh, husband of Anne Violet MacMillan Salvesen Cheyne of Edinburgh, Scotland. Writer to the Signet. Commemorated Dickebusch New Military cemetery Extension. II.D.26.

Private S/17704. 8th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. Killed in action 28th August 1917. Born Northmavine and enlisted Lerwick, Shetland Islands. Commemorated Aeroplane Cemetery. I.B.28.

Boatswain, Mercantile Marine. SS ‘Baron Ailsa’ (Ardrossan). Died 9th May 1918, aged 53 years. Son of (the late) Peter and Grace Mouat. Born Shetland Islands (place unspecified). Commemorated Tower Hill Memorial.

Seaman 577/L, Shetland Section, Royal Naval Reserve. Died 7th June 1916, aged 24 years. Son of Mrs Isabella Anderson of Hamnavoe, Eshaness, Shetland Islands. Commemorated Eshaness Old Churchyard.

Robert William

Sailor, Merchant Navy. MV ‘Empire Comet’ (Greenock). Died 19th February 1942, aged 22 years, Son of James and Harriet Anderson of Eshaness, Shetland Islands. Commemorated Tower Hill Memorial. Panel 39.
