North Nesting war memorial is to be found on a hill top at the centre of the district and takes the form of a Celtic cross on a three stepped base. There are seven names for World War 1 and three for World War 2.

Seaman 1006/L, Royal Naval Reserve. Shetland Section, HMS ‘Pembroke’. Died 15th March 1917, aged 25 years. Son of James and Barbara Anderson of Grindens, Wester Skeld, Shetland. Commemorated Wester Skeld Cemetery.

Robert John

Seaman 3717C, Royal Naval Reserve. HMS ‘Dundee’. Died 16th March 1917, aged 36 years. Son of Mrs Janet Anderson of 1 Gardie Court, Lerwick, Shetland. Commemorated Portsmouth Naval Memorial. 27.

ARTHUR

Robert

Leading Seaman 2923B, Royal Naval Reserve. SS ‘Hebburn’. Died 25th September 1918, aged 38 years. Son of Edward and (the late) Elizabeth Bruce Arthur of Whalsey, Shetland. Commemorated Portsmouth Naval Memorial. 31.

JOHNSON

Hugh Morrison

Carpenter, Mercantile Marine. SS ‘Lodaner’ (London). Died 14th April 1918, aged 29 years. Son of George and Martha Johnson of Gronafirt, Nesting, Shetland. Commemorated Tower Hill Memorial.

POLE

Thomas

Sapper 166919. 154th Field Company, Royal Engineers. Killed in action 17th November 1917, aged 22 years. Son of Laurence and Katherine Pole of Housabister, Shetland. Born Nesting, Shetland, enlisted Carlisle, Cumberland and resident Nesting, Shetland. Commemorated Tyne Cot Memorial. Panel 8 and 162.

POTTINGER

Francis

Private S/16343. 3rd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. Died home 2nd May 1917, aged 19 years. Son of William and Annie H Pottinger of Brettabister, Shetland. Born Nesting and enlisted Lerwick, Shetland. Commemorated Garth Old Churchyard.

ROBERTSON

Private S/43349. 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Killed in action 13th November 1916. Born and enlisted Lerwick, Shetland. Commemorated Queens Cemetery, Puisieux. B.17.

Ordinary Seaman, Merchant Navy. MV ‘Empire Statesman’ (Leith). Died 5th December 1940, aged 19 years. Son of John and Christina Gray of Nesting, Shetland. Commemorated Tower Hill Memorial. Panel 45.

HUNTER

Henry William

Chief Officer, Merchant Navy. MV ‘Silverpalm’ (London). Died 9th June 1941, aged 33 years. Son of Henry and Catherine Ann Hunter. Husband of Monica Josephine Hunter of Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, Ireland. Commemorated Tower Hill Memorial. Panel 97.

HUGHSON

Alexander

Master, Merchant Navy. MV ‘Lady Glanely’ (Cardiff). Died 2nd December 1940, aged 58 years. Son of Hugh and Helen Hughson. Husband of Isabel Hughson. Son Kenneth Arthur Hughson also fell. Commemorated Tower Hill Memorial. Panel 63.

Their name liveth evermore.
