HIGHBRIDGE WORKS WAR MEMORIAL
SOMERSET AND DORSET JOINT RAILWAY

World War 1 - Detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Neil Olsen 2014

The memorial originally formed part of the north wall of Highbridge Station, Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, and was subsequently moved, when the staion closed, to the Garden of Remembrance, Southwell Court, Highbridge, Sedgemoor, Somerset. The memorial takes the form of a large bronze tablet in relief, in Classical style, set against a wall which was part of the old staion. The relief shows a central wreath motive flanked by fluted columns and a triangular pediment above depicting a cross and crown. The inscription is on the pediment with the names of the fallen in the centre of the wreath below, a further four granite plaques with names of soldiers were added later and are attached to the stone base on which the memorial rests. There are 166 names listed for World War 1. The tablet was designed by a Somerset and Dorset apprentice and made in the Highbridge workshops. It was subscribed to by the staff of the locomotive, carriage, and waggon departments. The memorial was originally located at the locomotive works The memorial was originally unveiled 8 May 1922 by Sir Allen Garrett Anderson (director of the Midland Railway and the Somerset and Dorset Joint Committee) and dedicated by the Bishop of Bath and Wells.
