FENTON
WORLD WAR 2 MEMORIAL
World
War 1 and 2 and Boer - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and updated, copyright © William Davies. Fenton Community
Association. 2025.
The memorial in Albert Square was ‘Erected by voluntary subscriptions
in memory of the Fenton men who gave their lives in the Great War
and whose names are recorded on a tablet in the Town Hall.’
The Cenotaph was unveiled by Colonel John Vaughan Campbell V.C. on
Armistice Day, November 11th, 1922. The WW1 memorial inside the town
hall is a Minton Hollins enamelled faience memorial panel fixed to
the wall of the main staircase. Designed by Walter Brown, who had
been a student at Fenton Art School, contained the names of Fenton
men who had been killed in action during the First World War (1914-1918).
The memorial panel was unveiled by Colonel John Ward, the Member of
Parliament for Stoke-on-Trent, who had commanded the 25th Middlesex
Regiment during the war.
In addition there are separate pages for memorials to those who died
in the World War 1,
Boer War, and the Northern Ireland conflict.
From
2012 the Town Hall and its memorials were under threat from a sale
of the Town Hall by the Ministry of Justice. The Great Fenton Community
Association fought to keep the Town Hall and its memorials in the
control of the local community. It has been a long battle, over
10 years but the Town Hall is safe. During the Research undertaken
on the World War 2 memorial details of 54 other men whose names
were not recorded was discovered. The Great Fenton Community Association
then commissioned a new tablet to commemorate these men. It is black
Granite with silver lettering. The Memorial was unveiled by the
Lord Mayor Steve Watkins at a dedication service on Tuesday 8th
July 2025.

on operations in Blenheim and Wellington aircraft for a total of
nine months, during which period he carried out both day and night
sorties. Throughout his 'tour' of operations he has at all times
set a splendid example to other members of the squadron by his determination,
skill and devotion to duty. His sense of humour and discipline was
largely responsible for the good results obtained by the crew. If
there was a difficult job to be done there could always be relied
on Pilot Officer Rickinson to get there and obtain the best results.
